Techsters Withstand Heat to Win Seventh-Straight Match

Sept. 19, 2010

Box Score

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech used a season-high 25 shots to win their seventh-straight match, a 3-0 win over Jacksonville State on Sunday at Lady Techster Soccer Field.

The Lady Techsters faced two additional tests with the temperature over 100 degrees at game time and Tech playing its third game in five days, the previous two coming on the road.

"We have a very strong emphasis on fitness," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "We have stringent fitness tests and we do workouts during the season too. This was a result of all the work they put in."

Freshman Brittany Harbaugh got her team on the board first. In the 23rd minute, freshman Emily Brennan found Harbaugh open in front of the goal 10 yards out as the St. Louis, Mo. native drilled it in for her first collegiate goal.

In the 44th minute, Harbaugh took a corner kick and kicked it right to sophomore Lindsay Brough who scored for her second goal on the season and Harbaugh's first assist.

After taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, the Lady Techsters came out and scored immediately in the second period. After a shot by Brennan, junior Scotti Culton scored off the rebound for her third of the season.

Senior Kiva Gresham led the Techster shot attack with five. Freshman Lauren Africa led Tech with two shots on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke, due to JSU taking just one shot, had a relatively easy day as she needed no saves to record her eighth win and her third shutout.

Louisiana Tech improved to 9-2 on the season while Jacksonville State fell to 2-7-1.

"We just came off a long road trip," Sherry said. "I know I was tired so the players must have been exhausted. They were still able to follow the game plan and perform at a high level."

The Lady Techsters host Nicholls State on Friday at 3 p.m. before opening Western Athletic Conference play the following week.
