Early Goals Lead Louisiana Tech to 3-1 Win

Sept. 3, 2010

Box Score

RUSTON, La. - With two early goals, the Louisiana Tech soccer team improved its record to 4-2 with a 3-1 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday at the Lady Techster Soccer Field.

"That was a good win," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "That was a tough, tough game. They had some great players, so we were very happy with the result. The goals came at the right time, which gave us the insurance to basically hold on till the end of the game."

Outshooting the Lady Lions 17-4, the Lady Techsters capitalized on their eight shots on goal early on in the game.

The first goal came from sophomore Lindsay Brough in the 14th minute. The midfielder from Salt Lake City, Utah scored on a deflection off UAPB goalkeeper Bre-ann Laypoole. The deflected ball found Brough, a midfielder, 20-yards out from the goal in the center of the field for her first goal of the season.

"That was a great job by Lindsay," Sherry said. "She's not there to score goals and she's not there to be on offense. There was a cross that came in and the ball was pin-balling around and she followed up and hit a good strike on goal that went through the goalkeeper's legs."

Tech's second goal came in the 25th minute from junior Rachel King. Junior Scotti Culton handled the ball and made a short pass to King for her fourth goal of the season and Culton's third assist on the year.

"Scottie made a good decision not to shoot, but instead pass it to Rachel, who had the open goal," Sherry said. "Scotti had the shot, but it was a 50/50 shot, Rachel had a 100-percent shot."

Tech's third goal was scored in a bizarre way. In the 52nd minute, Tech was pushing for another scoring opportunity. However, instead of Tech scoring a goal, it was the Lady Lions that scored on their own goal to give the Lady Techsters a 3-0 lead.

UAPB (1-2) ended the shutout bid on a goal by Jade West in the 62nd minute with a 25-yard shot from the center of the field that sailed over the head of Lady Techster goalkeeper Caitlyn Updyke.

Updyke improved her goalkeeping record to 4-1 with one save on the day as the Tech defense held the Lady Lions took just two shots on goal.

Louisiana Tech next hosts McNeese State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
