ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior outside hitter
Taylor Fritz recorded her fifth career double-double to help Louisiana Tech to a 3-2 (24-26, 25-16, 25-20, 12-25, 15-9) win over Texas-Pan American in the opening round of the Maverick Classic inside Texas Hall on Friday morning.
"Taylor played very well," said head coach Matt Sonnichsen. "She had a very good match and was definitely someone who was key to our win today as she made some nice plays to push us through and get the win."
Featuring a revamped lineup, Tech fell behind early after UTPA took advantage of a poor passing game en route to an early 17-9 lead. However, the Lady Techsters would find a spark on offense and fight their way back into the match before ultimately falling, 26-24.
Building upon the momentum gained late in the first set, Tech bounced back in the next two sets after finding their grove on the passing front as Fritz and junior Mallory Stanley capitalized on the hot streak by leading the Lady Techsters on key point runs. In addition to a high hitting efficiency, the Tech hitters made sound decisions in both ball placement and challenging blocks.
Leading 2-1, Louisiana Tech's passing broke in the fourth set allowing UTPA back into the match with a 25-12 win.
Plagued by too many errors in the fourth set, Tech would get another burst of energy behind the play of Fritz as she held down the outside position, giving the Lady Techsters a 15-9 set win and the match.
Fritz finished the match with a career-high 15 kills and 11 digs.
"They players did a nice job of keeping their composure. It was a very early morning match and we are still trying to work out kinks of having to revamp our lineup after the two injuries last week," said Sonnichsen. "It was an exciting match and I'm glad that our kids had some great composure in the fifth game and were able to push through in the end."
The Lady Techsters will be back in action this evening at 7 p.m. in the Maverick Classic against host school, UT Arlington.
