RUSTON, La. - Jennifer Goodwin recorded a season-high 10 kills while picking up her first career double-double as the Lady Techsters swept past Jackson State 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-18) in their home opener on Tuesday night at the Thomas Assembly Center.
"Jennifer did real well after we switched her back to the left side where she was more comfortable last year," said head coach Matt Sonnichsen. "She looked good on the outside as she adjusted defensively and she hit a very high percentage for us."
Goodwin paced the Lady Techster offensive attack with 10 kills and a hitting efficiency of .389. Senior Taylor Fritz also contributed double-digit kills for the fourth time in six games while Kara Jones added seven kills and a match-high .538 hitting efficiency.
Facing a one point deficit early, Tech capitalized on a service error by Jackson State allowing the Lady Techsters to go on a 3-0 run highlighted by Jones' first kill of the night. Leading 6-4, the Tigers would trim the Tech lead to one off of a service error. However, another kill by Jones would catapult the Lady Techsters to a 20-6 run and a .357 (14-4-28) team hitting efficiency en route to a 25-11 first set win.
Louisiana Tech (4-4) raced out to a 5-0 lead in the second set as Gabryel Ording, Fritz and Goodwin overpowered the Jackson State (2-4) defense with dominant kills. The Tigers could never truly recover as the Lady Techsters built a commanding 24-11 lead in the frame. Nevertheless, the Tigers staved off defeat as they rallied by forcing multiple attack errors before Goodwin ultimately solidified the win for Tech, 25-15.
"Prior to the match I switched positions moving to the outside from the opposite," said Goodwin. "I did that last year and it was just more comfortable. It fits me."
Coming out of the break with a two set deficit, the Tigers found a little bit of a spark as they traded mini scoring runs with Tech, knotting the score at 15 apiece. However, it would prove to be too little too late as Louisiana Tech would close out the match in straight sets off of a 10-3 run.
With the win, Louisiana Tech improves to 4-0 all-time against Jackson State as the Lady Techsters have dominated the series taking all 12 sets against the Tigers.
"It's nice to be home," said Sonnichsen. "Our road trips weren't too far away but we had to play a lot of games. Our student-athletes were very steady especially considering the injuries that we are trying to get over right now."
Tech returns to action this weekend as the squad hosts the Lady Techster Invitational. Louisiana Tech will open play with two matches on Friday against Grambling State and Southeastern Louisiana before closing out the invitational against Centenary College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
