HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Louisiana Tech opened the 2011 season with a 5-2 loss to Jacksonville State on Saturday in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Elne Barnard played No. 1 singles for the Lady Techsters as last year's No. 1, Vivian den Tolle, currently is not eligible to play. Since the sophomore rejoined the team this quarter, she won't be eligible until February 24, the end of the quarter.

Barnard fit had no problem in the No. 1 slot on Saturday as she easily defeated Marani Vivane 6-2, 6-3. Tech's other point came from sophomore Alena Erofeyeva who beat Rafaela Wenzel 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The doubles team of Erofeyeva and Melanie Urvoy defeated Raisa Guasti and Ralphaela Lima 8-5, but JSU won the other two matches to capture the doubles point.

Tech (0-1) will take on Southern Miss on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
