Lady Techsters Down Jackson State 1-0

Sept. 11, 2011

Final Stats

JACKSON, Miss. - Freshman Abby Sentz (Kingwood, Texas) scored the game's lone goal in the Louisiana Tech soccer team's 1-0 victory over Jackson State Sunday afternoon at JSU Soccer Complex. The matchup was the first of four consecutive road games for the Lady Techsters.

"The team is playing with a lot of heart to overcome the worst luck I have experienced with injuries," said head coach Kevin Sherry.

With the victory, Tech is now 5-1-3 on the year while the Tigers fall to 0-4-0.

Sentz scored in the 71st minute off an assist from senior Scotti Culton (Waterloo, Ill.). The goal was Sentz's third of the year, tying her with senior Olivia Lukasewich (Woodbridge, Ontario) for the most on the team.

The assist by Culton was her third of the season which tied her with sophomore Taylor Dennis (Albuquerque, N.M.) for the team lead. Culton now has 18 career assists and needs only three more to pass former teammate Kiva Gresham for the most in program history.

Sophomore Caitlin Updyke (Broomfield, Colo.) started in goal for the Lady Techsters, stopping four shots and lowering her goals against average to 0.33 in the her sixth shutout of the year. Updyke now has 13 shutouts in her career, which places her alone atop the career list and breaks a tie with teammate senior Cat Buchanan (Shawnee, Kan.).

Tech outshot JSU 20-6 lead by Dennis' seven shots, three on goal and was followed by Culton with six shots, two of them on goal.

"Once again the game showed our lack of a striker who has the composure to finish the chances we create," Sherry said.

Patricia Cartwright lead the Tigers with two shots and goalkeeper Taylor Emerson was credited with eight saves.

Next weekend Tech travels to the Lone Star State to face future conference foe Texas State on Friday night and Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon.
