SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Louisiana Tech opens its spring golf season Monday when Jeff Parks and the Bulldogs travel to Texas to compete in the 15-team 2012 UTSA Oak Hills Invitational hosted by UTSA.
The event will be held at the Oak Hills Country Club, a 6,765-yard, par 71 course located in San Antonio.
This year's field includes Baylor, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Oklahoma, Rice, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State, Texas Tech, Tulsa, UTSA and Wichita State. Texas Tech is the defending champions after the Red Raiders won last year's tournament by firing a team total of 15-under-par.
The event starts Monday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start as both a morning and afternoon round will be played followed by Tuesday's third and final round.
Live stats will be available for the 54-hole, two-day event as fans can follow the action at http://golfstat.com.
The Bulldogs will be represented at the tournament by a five-man team consisting of seniors Cody Santone, Jonathan Bale, and Cody Blankenship, junior Sam Forgan and sophomore Travis Wilmore who all advanced through a team qualifier this past week.
"We are very excited about the spring season," Parks said. "We have some competitive tournaments that we will be participating in and we will have the opportunity to improve our ranking with the strength of these fields. Our goal is to win the WAC Championships in May and make it to regionals. We want to send our four seniors off with some great memories."
The Bulldogs competed in four tournaments during the fall with their top finish coming at the Squire Creek Invitational where they placed second out of 13 teams. Tech had one other top five finish during the fall, placing fifth at the 18-team UTA/Waterchase Invitational.
"We will have to improve from the fall season by performing better at the tournaments," Parks said. "We can do this by relaxing and having fun instead of putting extra pressure on ourselves to perform. Confidence is a big key to being relaxed. After our off-season of workouts and practice, we are full of confidence and ready to play. I look forward to UTSA and the challenges ahead."
Forgan (72.7) and Santone (72.9) led the Bulldogs in the fall season as both of them recorded five rounds of par or better.
