HENDERSON, Nevada - Sam Forgan shot a one-over-par 73 in the opening day of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Tournament, but Louisiana Tech struggled as a team as the Bulldogs sit in a tie for seventh place after 18 holes at Rio Secco Golf Club.
Idaho and Fresno State are tied for the lead at one-under-par 287 followed by San Jose State (290), New Mexico State (293), Utah State (294), Nevada (301), LA Tech (304) and Hawaii (304).
"It wasn't a pretty day overall," said Tech head coach Jeff Parks. "We didn't play up to expectations. Not sure what to pinpoint it on. We just didn't execute some of the shots we needed to. Travis had a tough day and Blankenship didn't hit it as well as he needed to. We didn't light it up like I thought we might.
"They are Bulldogs for a reason. They will fight. There is not give-up in them. They have their work cut out for them. It will be interesting to see. It's not that they didn't want it ... might have wanted it too much. Hopefully we can relax and go play golf tomorrow."
The 54-hole event continues Tuesday with the second round slated to begin at 9 a.m. CT.
In addition to Forgan's solid opening round, Cody Santone shot a 74 and Jonathan Bale a 76 for head coach Jeff Parks Bulldogs. However, Cody Blankenship and Travis Wilmore both struggled, shooting 81 and 85 respectively.
Idaho's Sean McMullen leads the individual competition after shooting a seven-under-par 65 followed by Utah State's Tanner Higham (68) and San Jose State's Jay Myers (69).
