MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Sophomore Rosie Lethbridge came into today's match with only seven shot attempts and zero goals this season, but her right foot catapulted Louisiana Tech to a 1-0 upset over Middle Tennessee on Sunday evening at the Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
The score was nil-nil until the 64th minute when freshman Annabel Prior took a shot from 18 yards out that deflected off the left post. With a diving keeper out of line, the ball kicked to the right where Lethbridge rushed in to punch the ball into the empty net.
The impressive win gave LA Tech (7-7-1, 2-3 C-USA) an important three points to keep pace with the west division in hopes of making the Conference USA tournament.
"The ladies did an unbelievable job," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "They followed the game plan exactly. We had to adapt our game plan against such a powerful team and the plan worked. To win on the road against Middle Tennessee is right up there with this program's best moments."
The Lady Techsters played most of the first half very defensive, allowing Middle Tennessee (5-5-3, 2-2-1 C-USA) to keep possession in the midfield while maintaining a strong back line.
Whenever the ball would get to the center forwards, LA Tech would immediately double and triple team the strikers, frustrating MT's offense for most of the evening.
At halftime, the Techsters had only two shots while the Blue Raiders only had five.
In customary fashion, LA Tech slowly started to push more players forward on offense and put pressure on Middle Tennessee in the second period.
The team took two shots and had their first two corner kicks of the day after the break before Lethbridge mopped up the loose ball for her first goal this season.
MT had few opportunities in the remaining 25 minutes of regulation. The Blue Raiders did receive a free kick just outside the penalty box with three minutes remaining, but the shot was blocked by the wall of LA Tech.
Goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke needed only three saves versus the reigning regular season co-champs of the Sun Belt to notch her fourth shutout of the year.
LA Tech returns to Ruston for homecoming weekend to take on UTEP at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
