Final Stats
DENVER, Colo. - Louisiana Tech used the doubles point and three straight set wins in singles to shut out the No. 6 seed Texas State, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament at the Gates Tennis Center.
No. 3 seeded LA Tech (15-4) advances to the semifinals where they will take on the No. 2 seed San Jose Spartans who is also ranked 66th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
"We are happy with our performance and with the result against a good Texas State team," said head coach Freddy Gomez. "We look forward to our next match as we move on in the WAC Tournament."
The Lady Techsters quickly went up 1-0 in the match with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in doubles by scores of 8-3 and 8-4, respectively.
After teaming up with Joanna Nalborska to clinch the doubles, Alexandra Starkova defeated Melissa Hadad 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 position to give LA Tech a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Seconds later, Manoela Chiacchio cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Berenice Van den Bergh from the No. 6 spot to improve her singles winning streak to a team-high 10 matches.
With three close battles going on at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5, Melanie Urvoy came up with the match clincher at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Rachel Baldree.
The first serve between LA Tech and San Jose State is set for Friday at 3 p.m. CT with the winner advancing to the conference championship.
