Conference USA Notebook
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech hits the midpoint of Conference USA play this weekend as they head to the east coast to face off against Charlotte on Friday night at 6 p.m. CT at Transamerica Field, the host site of the conference tournament.
LA Tech (9-4-1, 1-3 C-USA) will then travel to the state of Virginia to take on Old Dominion on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT at the Old Dominion Soccer Complex.
The Lady Techsters are going for win No. 10 on the year, a feat they have accomplished in four of the past six seasons under head coach Kevin Sherry.
The team certainly has some extra confidence going into the road weekend, coming off a big 2-1 victory over UAB to grab their first three points of the conference schedule.
"The team has had an extra bounce to their step this week after the great win over UAB, but we know we have a tough challenge ahead of us this weekend," Sherry said. "Winning on the road in this strong soccer conference is always tough. We need to dig deep and find some points this weekend and I am confident the ladies will give everything to do so."
The two strikers, Kathryn Sloan and Donya Salomon-Ali, who netted the goals against the Blazers will need to bring their A-game once more with the first matchup being against the preseason conference favorite Charlotte (5-5-1, 2-2 C-USA).
The 49ers have split both opening weekends of conference action and are led by freshman forward Martha Thomas who scored the game-winner in their most recent match, a 3-0 shutout at WKU. It was her team-leading seventh goal.
The other opponent, Old Dominion (3-6-3, 2-1-1 C-USA), started out with a 1-5-2 record in non-conference but have since turned in two wins and a draw in C-USA which currently puts them in a tie for third place thus far.
This past weekend, the Lady Monarchs came from behind with a man-down to beat WKU, 2-1. They followed that performance up with a 1-1 draw with Marshall. ODU is led by Jessie Klamut and Madison Hogan who each have four goals on the season.
Both meetings will be the first ever for the Techsters.
