March 20, 2014

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Louisiana Tech recorded six extra base hits, including a pair of monster home runs, to defeat Belmont 7-3 Thursday night at Rose Park.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the sixth, Tech (9-19) got a grand slam from Bianca Duran in the sixth and a three-run home run from Pauline Tufi in the seventh to snap its nine-game losing streak.

Tufi (6-4) picked up her sixth win of the season in relief, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four in 3.0 innings of action. Duran started the game and held Belmont to only one run on three hits and one walk in 4.0 innings in the circle.

Belmont took a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out infield single on a play that was originally ruled as the third out of the frame. However, the crew overturned their call at first base as the Bruins grabbed the early advantage.

The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the bottom of the fifth inning when a two-out infield error allowed Belmont to plate two runs as up its lead to 3-0.

After recording only two hits through the first five innings, the Lady Techsters finally found their offense in the top of the sixth inning. Erin Kipp led off with a double to right field and Janine Godwin followed with a single. After Tufi reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Duran launched her first career home run - a grand slam - over the left field wall to give Tech the 4-3 lead.

Tech added onto its lead in the seventh. Once again Erin Kipp doubled followed by a walk by Godwin. Tufi then hit her second home run of the season, scoring three and upping Tech's advantage to 7-3.

Belmont threatened in the bottom of the seventh with a single and a LA Tech error but Tufi retired the final batter to end the game.

Offensively, Tech was led by Erin Kipp (2-4, 2 doubles, 2 runs), Godwin (1-3, 2 runs, SB), Tufi (1-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI), Duran (1-4, 1 run, 4 RBI), Katelynn Hill (1-3) and Hailey Winter (2-3, 2 doubles).

Tech will return to Conference USA action Saturday when it opens a three-game series at Middle Tennessee.
