RUSTON ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" Kathryn Sloan scored in the third minute and Monica Gebler tacked on another goal late to help Louisiana Tech defeat UTSA, 2-0, in dominating fashion on Sunday afternoon at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.

For the second straight game, LA Tech (11-7, 4-4 C-USA) picked up a home shutout victory in almost a must-win situation in order to keep pace in the Conference USA race.

"The team did very well today against an opposition who, just like us, knew they had to win to keep their postseason qualification chances alive," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "The team came together well to compensate for the loss of two injured teammates from Friday. We played today with two of our 'quarterbacks' out of the game and I am so proud of how the rest of the players dealt with the adversity and met the challenge placed in front of them.

"UTSA is a quality team who is well coached, and we knew any positive result for us today would have to be earned rather than being handed to us. We now focus on the next game with our fate still in our hands."

The Lady Techsters made quick work of getting on the scoreboard. Just 150 seconds into the match, Lisanne Kelgrewe delivered a perfect through ball to Mylene Roy-Ouellet inside the right corner of the 18. The forward then crossed the ball which was deflected, but Sloan was at the top of the six and finished it into the right corner.

It marked Sloan's team-leading ninth goal of the season. It was also her 27th goal of her career which ties for the second most in program history.

For the next 75 minutes of play, the back line of the Techsters overpowered UTSA (1-13-1, 1-6 C-USA) who was only able to get off four total shots, none of which were real scoring threats.

Meanwhile, LA Tech had numerous chances to put away the match with breakaways and one-on-ones with the opposing keeper but was unable to finish the scoring chances.

It was not until the 79th minute when a breakaway by Roy-Ouellet down the heart of the attacking third was shot and saved by the keeper, but Gebler raced down the right wing and was able to score into the open net off the deflection.

It was the sophomore's second goal of the season and Roy-Ouellet was credited with her second assist of the match.

The Techsters outshot the Roadrunners, 24-4, in the match with nine of those coming on goal. Goalkeeper Kylee Seto recorded two saves while picking up her sixth shutout of the season and 16th of her career.

Senior Brittany Beddow made history by making her program record 73rd career start.

Next up for LA Tech is its final road game of the season, traveling to take on Middle Tennessee on Sunday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
