BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Louisiana Tech was only down two points with 13 minutes left in the game, but UAB exploded for a 19-4 run to help down the Bulldogs, 80-60, on Thursday night in Bartow Arena.
After a stepback three-pointer by Alex Hamilton and an offensive rebound and putback by Joniah White got LA Tech (17-6, 8-2 C-USA) to within one possession, 54-52, the `Dogs went ice cold on offense missing 16 of their next 18 shots.
The Bulldogs ended up shooting just 9-of-36 for 25 percent in the second stanza and scored only six points in the final 13 minutes of action.
UAB (12-11, 8-2 C-USA) won the battle of the boards, 49-34, to aid in its scoring 19 second chance points and also did damage on offense from beyond the arc (6-of-11) and at the charity stripe (16-of-19).
"They pounded us on the glass and made all the right plays," head coach Michael White said. "They were fantastic on the interior, finishing at a really high percentage. We did not execute very well at times, but I am always a lot more concerned with the way we defend and rebound.
"If we would have gotten more stops, we would have scored enough to win. Our defense and our rebounding let us down."
The Bulldogs were in foul trouble much of the first half with Michale Kyser, Alex Hamilton and Erik McCree all having two fouls. The one that hurt the most was McCree, arguably the `Dogs best defensive rebounder, who missed the last 11 minutes of action.
Despite the fouls and being outrebound 29-11, LA Tech trailed just 44-37 at halftime behind 10 forced turnovers and 15 first half points from Raheem Appleby.
McCree came back on the floor to start the second half and made the Bulldogs first six points, but the Blazers were able to hold Appleby to just two points in the stanza and take care of the basketball to the tune of just five turnovers.
Appleby finished with a game-high 17 points. McCree was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 11 points.
On the flipside, UAB had five players in double figures, led by Nick Norton who had 16 points, including four three-pointers.
Next up for LA Tech is a road matchup against Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the American Sports Network.
