MONROE, La. ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" It did not take long for Mylene Roy-Ouellet to make a big impact on the field.
Just one minute into the second period, the true freshman hit a bender into the upper left corner to give Louisiana Tech a 2-1 victory over ULM on Friday night at the ULM Soccer Complex.
The win marked the first time since 2006 that LA Tech was victorious in a season opener which came on the road. It was also the first ever victory over ULM with the two teams having met only once before tonight.
"It was a very interesting game between two good teams," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "You had two contrasting styles of play coming together to make a very entertaining game. On the one side you had the aggressive, intimidating power game from ULM as opposed to the more cerebral, technical style ourselves. ULM had a longer preseason to prepare for the game, but I was very proud with how my team was able to come together in the manner they did."
It only took nine minutes for LA Tech (1-0) to get on the scoreboard and it came via the preseason All-Conference USA selection Kathryn Sloan.
After a ULM corner kick was cleared out, Sloan was able to win a strong 50-50 ball and drove down the right flank on a counter attack. She dribbled into the box and beat the keeper 1-v-1 on a cross into the lower left corner. It marked career goal No. 19 for the junior.
However, ULM (0-1) came up the equalizer in the 19th minute on a set piece at midfield. Whitney Tuckfield took the free kick and sent it into the box. The header was flicked by Mary Ashton Lembo over the top of goalkeeper Kylee Seto.
Roy-Ouellet got her first crack at the game-winner later in the first period when she beat the keeper to the ball when she came off her line. After trying to clear space, her shot ended up being saved by a Warhawk defender with an open net.
With the match tied up, 1-1, at halftime, the freshman capitalized on her first collegiate goal in the 46th minute. After receiving a long ball in the left corner of the box from senior Brittany Beddow, Roy-Ouellet stayed onside and buried the shot past the diving keeper. Beddow was credited with the assist, the 17th of her career.
LA Tech was able to dispossess ULM and hold possession for the majority of the second period to preserve the win.
The Lady Techsters ended up with a 15-11 shot advantage. Seto was credited with four saves.
Several Techsters, along with Roy-Ouellet, saw their first collegiate action including Makenna Johnson who was part of the starting XI. The others included Kaitlyn Cunningham, Moriah Phillips, Emma Mele, Mariah Rojas and Kendall Ayers.
"We started with experience to begin the game and gradually introduced the new players into the match so they could benefit from the experience which was a huge positive," Sherry said. "Overall, it was a very satisfying day and now all of our focus is on Sunday and Lamar for our home opener."
LA Tech returns to action for its home opener on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Lamar at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
