RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech had its seven-game home winning streak come to end in a heartbreaking way, falling in the Conference USA opener to Old Dominion, 2-1, in overtime on Friday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.

With both teams oddly scoring on their first shot attempts of the night in the first 130 seconds of action, the match was tied up for another 95 minutes until the LA Tech (7-4, 0-1 C-USA) back line misplayed a high ball which was finished by the ODU (3-7, 1-0 C-USA) forward.

"A game of missed opportunities pretty much summed this night up," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "We had so many easy opportunities score, including the penalty kick. ODU is a good team, but I think we managed the game better and deserved to win. You just knew that if you keep missing those opportunities that eventually they would get a chance and punish us.

"Our defense did great tonight and we had another great crowd. We will move on and hope we start putting away our chances going forward into conference play."

As the visiting team, you always want to strike early and that is exactly what the Lady Monarchs did. Just 82 seconds into the match, a cross by Melanie Oakes was delivered into the box where Grace Haverly flicked a header into the right corner.

There lead would be quickly erased though. Less than a minute later, Annie Armstrong delivered a cross of her own into the box where a charging Kathryn Sloan beat the keeper for the equalizer. It was her team-leading fifth goal of the season and 23rd of her career.

Very few scoring chances were created over the next 30 minutes of action until Sloan gathered a through ball while staying onside and had a 1-v-1 opportunity. The ODU keeper, Erin Kinz, came off her line and was able to get enough of a touch on the ball to push it away. She then managed to get back to her line just in time to punch a shot by Brittany Beddow over the crossbar.

Beddow would get another opportunity in the 60th minute after teammate Donya Salomon-Ali was taken down in the box. The head referee awarded the Lady Techsters a penalty kick.

Having never missed a PK, the senior was denied the potential game-winner as the keeper guessed correctly and came up with the save.

LA Tech had two more shots, one by Sloan and the other by Annabel Prior, in the second period that were inches away from going in. Sloan's attempt was saved from close range and Prior's went off the crossbar.

Both teams subbed very little, giving the good possibility of the match ending in a 1-1 draw, but in the 98th minute a high ball sent into the box by Kathryn Hill found the foot of Madison Hogan who got just enough of it to sneak it past Kylee Seto.

The Techsters held a 13-12 shot advantage and a 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Seto registered seven saves in the loss.

LA Tech will now try to regroup as they travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky on Sunday to face WKU at 1 p.m.
