LA Tech season stats
RUSTON ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" Louisiana Tech stars Erik McCree and Jacobi Boykins combined to go 6-of-26 from the field and 0-of-13 from three-point range.
No worries though as the Duncanville, Texas duo of Jalen Harris and Omar Sherman came to the rescue to the tune of 45 combined points to lead the Bulldogs to a 79-63 victory over Oklahoma Baptist on Wednesday night inside the Thomas Assembly Center.
The freshman Harris got his first career start at LA Tech (2-2) and made the most of it, scoring 19 of his career-high 24 points in the first half. He came in with shooting woes much like McCree and Boykins had tonight, but got rid of them by hitting three from beyond the arc (was previously 0-of-9).
Meanwhile, Sherman was an unstoppable force down low as the junior connected on 9-of-13 field goals for a career-high 21 points.
"McCree and Boykins are such important parts to our team and very good shooters," head coach Eric Konkol said. "This was a very odd night in that regard, but very happy we were still able to find a way. Harris and Sherman were able to pick up the slack. Those guys are growing. There was a nice inside-outside connection with those guys tonight."
OKBU (1-4) was able to keep the game close, hitting eight three-pointers in the first half. After Vladimir Nemcok hit the team's eighth three to close the gap to 36-34 with four minutes to go until intermission, the Bulldogs closed the stanza on a 13-0 run with 10 of those points coming from Harris and Sherman.
LA Tech managed to limit the Bison to just two made shots from three-point range in the second half while also having a +10 turnover margin for the game to keep the Bison from creeping back into it.
Despite struggling on his jump shot, McCree managed to score 12 points (third straight game in double figures). Also scoring 12 was Bracey which tied a career-high. The freshman point guard added a team-high five assists, bringing his season total to 17 with just one turnover surrendered.
"Defensively, I was not happy with the way we guarded the three-point shot," Konkol said of what needs to be worked on going into the next game. "We knew that was what they wanted to do. Offensively, we need to keep working on our rhythm so we can be at our best. It is a process, getting everybody together, and building that type of continuity."
The 'Dogs dominated the paint where they had a 50-20 scoring advantage and a 44-36 rebounding edge (Joniah White totaled a career-high 11 boards).
They finished the game making 32-of-72 from the field for 44 percent while the Bison were 23-of-58 for 40 percent. OKBU's Chandler Rickey and Kevin Franceschi tallied 17 points apiece.
Next up for LA Tech is a home matchup versus Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday, Nov. 27. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. in the TAC.
