Dec. 6, 2016 IRVING, Texas - Fresh off its second Western Division title in three years, Louisiana Tech has produced a league-high seven selections to the first team and a total of 13 first and second-team members on Conference USA's 2016 All-Conference football teams, it was announced Tuesday.
The teams are selected by the league's 13 head football coaches, while 11 of the 13 schools placed at least one player on the first team with LA Tech leading the way with seven first team selections. The Bulldogs had the second-most combined first and second-team members with 13, behind WKU who had 14 combined selections.
The seven honorees produced by Louisiana Tech include four offensive standouts, two defensive members and one special teams player. Carlos Henderson earned spots as both a wide receiver (1,406 yards and a league-high 17 touchdown receptions) and a kick returner (30.4 average and two returns for touchdowns), while he is joined by Trent Taylor, who recently broke the single-season C-USA record with 124 catches as a senior. Taylor became just the fourth Bulldog in school history to record two 1,000-yard seasons in a career by totaling 1,570 yards and 10 touchdown receptions this season. Taylor holds the Louisiana Tech program record with 315 career receptions.
Quarterback Ryan Higgins was also named to the first team after throwing for 4,208 passing yards and 37 touchdowns on the season to help lead the Bulldogs to their second C-USA West Division title. Higgins is currently ranked first in the conference is passing yards, passing yards per game and passing touchdowns, while is also the league-leader and ranks third nationally in total offense (374.3) as a senior.
Offensive lineman Darrell Brown earned a spot on the first team after paving the way for LA Tech's nationally-ranked offense, while on the opposite side of the ball, defensive end Jaylon Ferguson and senior safety Xavier Woods also were named first team All-Conference for the Bulldogs.
As a sophomore, Ferguson is ranked fourth in the nation and leads Conference USA in sacks with 14.5 for a loss of 89 yards on the season, while also registering 45 total tackles, including 16 tackles for loss. Ferguson also forced four fumbles this season and recovered two.
Woods registered a league-best five interceptions on the season while totaling 81 tackles throughout the year for the Bulldogs. He recorded 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks on the season. His five interceptions on the year is ranked ninth nationally. Woods was also named to the 2016 C-USA All-Academic Team last week for the third consecutive season.
In addition to the Bulldogs' first team selections, Louisiana Tech placed two offensive linemen on the second team with both senior Joseph Brunson and sophomore O'Shea Dugas earning spots.
Defensively, senior linebacker Jordan Harris was named second team All-Conference after leading the Bulldogs in tackles this season with 94 (53 solo). Harris saw action in 12 games and recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack and two pass break-ups on the season.
Kicker Jonathan Barnes also earned a place on the second team after the two-time Lou Groza Award semifinalist was 20-of-25 on field goals and connected on 71-of-72 PATs this season for the Bulldogs.
Also on special teams, Trent Taylor earned second-team honors as a punt returner (17 returns for 178 yards and 10.5 average), while long snapper Darrell Travis was also selected to the league's second team.
Louisiana Tech also had seven student-athletes named Conference USA Honorable Mention, including Jarred Craft (RB), Kam McKnight (WR/TE), Aaron Brown (DL), Deldrick Canty (DL), Russell Farris (LB), Secdrick Cooper (DB) and Prince Sam (DB).
The Bulldogs will head to Fort Worth, Texas, on Dec. 23 to take on No. 25-ranked Navy in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl at Amon G. Carter Stadium on the campus of TCU. The game is set for a 3:30 p.m. CT kickoff and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
Louisiana Tech ended the season as the Conference USA West Division champions after going 8-5 overall with a 6-2 mark in league play.
The league's individual awards will be released Wednesday, Dec. 7. Conference USA will conclude the 2016 season by sending a league-record seven teams to bowl games.
