RUSTON ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" In the regional showdown between Louisiana Tech and Northwestern State, the Lady Techsters came out on top in their home opener with a 6-1 win over the Lady Demons on Saturday afternoon at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.

LA Tech (3-1) picked up its third straight victory of the dual season and the fourth straight against the reigning Southland Conference champions NSU (0-1).

"The team played with a lot of heart today," head coach Chad Camper said. "I am most proud of how they dug down and found a way to win. Northwestern State is a quality team with a lot of experience. Starkova played excellent on court one to come away with a big win as did the rest of the players."

The Techsters continued their strong play in doubles, grabbing the doubles point for a fourth straight time.

Jazmin Britos and Marta Srakova teamed up to win 6-2 on court two. The tandem of Taly Merker and Manoela Chiacchio followed that up with a 6-3 win on court three.

The Lady Demons punched back at the start of singles, getting up early on a few courts.

The hard-hitting was definitely on display at No. 1 in the battle between Alexandra Starkova and Natalya Krutova, both ranked in the top 20 in the ITA Southern Region.

Starkova would eventually get the upper-hand, grabbing a 6-4, 6-3 victory to put the Techsters up 2-0 in the match.

Getting out of the blocks quickly was Alba Escalona Perny at No. 5 who did not drop a game in the first set and closed it out 6-4 in the second set.

The clincher then came from Chiacchio on court six with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Ilijana Ivic. Also picking up insurance victories were Britos at No. 2 and Sramkova at No. 4, each doing so via straight sets.

NSU picked up its lone point at No. 3.

LA Tech returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 9 when it takes on another regional opponent in McNeese State. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Lake Charles at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
