Feb. 6, 2016 Recap | Final Stats
Brandi Wingate
"He told us that we needed to pick up the intensity. Everything is against you. You have to pick up the intensity. Crash the boards, because they were up on the boards. He preached on rebounding and defense."
"Defensively we were not focused and they were getting the shots they wanted. With every turnover we had, they were converting points."
Tyler Summitt
Opening Statement:
"North Texas does a great job pressuring the ball and getting after you. It is something we are going to see Thursday against Middle Tennessee. We have to get used to that. We have to handle that and use it to get back doors. We only got one back door and it was a lob that almost touched the ceiling by Kierra Anthony. I did not think we took advantage of their pressure. We did not punish them for what they did. That led to instant offense for them. I thought they were very good in 3-on-2, 2-on-1 and 4-on-3 situations. We need to take a page out of their book. Jalie Mitchell does a great job with her program."
On defense
"I thought we were a little disjointed in the second half with our defenses. You have to credit North Texas with the high ball screen and the wing ball screen, with a wing side duck in. I thought they really had a lot of different options. They ran the same thing over and over, they ran it well. I thought we got the hang of it in the second half."
On Brandi Wingate:
"They did not hard double. I am still waiting someone to hard double her and test us on that. I really thought they would. 1-on-1, if she has it in her mind that she is not going to fade away, nine times out of 10 it is two points or a foul. I credit our whole team for getting her the ball. I also credit Brandi. I thought she was more aggressive. Against Rice she settled for fadeaways, 18-footers and we yelled at her in film for that. We told her that she is a mismatch nightmare and she is letting the other team have a break by taking those outside shots and the fadeaways. I am proud of her. I told her that we needed her. I said it is nice having you for the fourth quarter, but I would love to have you for all four quarters. I thought she did that scoring wise."
"Brandi Wingate was more aggressive this game, she did not shoot the fadeaways or 18 footers and had a career high. Hopefully she learns from this and now gets 12 or 14 rebounds next game."
On Ashley Santos:
"The thing about these players, we had on weight vests yesterday in practice going hard where normally it would be a walk through. Brandi Wingate had sore knees. This was Brooke's first day back from a concussion. Ashley Santos hyperextended her knee and was pushing through. I really thought we had some physical toughness today to come out. Ashley really turned it on and I could see it in her eyes that her knee really hurt. You could tell something was wrong. I was proud of her. I thought we moved well without the ball in that second half."
On Kierra Anthony:
"She is one of the quickest players on our team. I thought today she was a lot more intense and not so nonchalant. I was proud of her for that."
On free throws:
"We cannot get used to getting in a hole and coming back. That was a very big problem last year, where we got used to that and thought that no matter what, we could always come back. Sometimes we did and sometimes we did not. We have to know if we want to compete for championships, you have to put together 40-minute games. I do not care who your opponent is. You put together 40-minute games. That was the message in the locker room after the game."
On Middle Tennessee:
"There is a lot of basketball left. This is a tough, tough road trip. We should have lost both games last year on this road trip. To play Middle Tennessee first is going to be a very tough challenge. I think our players will be motivated for this game, just like they were for UTEP and other top teams in our conference. We have to make it a habit to be motivated for every game, whether that is MTSU, UTSA or whoever. We just have to keep being consistent. Being 5-0 at home really helps. To go 2-0 on this road trip would be incredible. We want at least a split, at bare minimum."
