LA Tech season stats
THIBODAUX, La. ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" It did not turn into a four-hour weather delay like the Louisiana Tech football game, but the soccer team endured a one-hour delay due to lightning before the match was called 74 minutes in.
LA Tech had the upperhand at that point, extending their unbeaten streak to seven with the 2-1 victory over Nicholls State at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
It was a historic victory as well with head coach Kevin Sherry picking up his 100th win at the helm of the program. Also reaching a milestone was senior forward Kathryn Sloan who netted the first goal of the match to give her 77 career points, a new program record.
"Once the game is past 70 minutes it is considered an official game," Sherry acknowledged. "The conditions were tough which meant both teams were equal. We scored two very good worked goals. The team battled hard on a wet playing field making passing and movement very difficult."
Sloan got things started in the right direction for the Lady Techsters, receiving a pass from Madison Doll which resulted in an early goal 17 minutes. It marked Sloan's fourth goal of the season and the 31st of her career.
With LA Tech (7-1-1) continuing to push forward into its attacking third, generating numerous corner kick opportunities, it was not until freshman Jordyn Rolli made it 2-0 with a goal in the 37th minute. It came off the assist from Kendall Ayers and was Rolli's first career goal, coming just four minutes after subbing into the match for the first time.
However, Nicholls State (3-2) was able to slice into the lead just 30 seconds before intermission when Taylor Douglas converted on a header goal.
There were very few scoring opportunities through the first part of the second period as field conditions began to worsen. It was not until lightning struck nearby, forcing an automatic 30-minute delay. Nearly an hour after the delay began, the match was called and made official.
LA Tech held a 13-2 shot advantage in the match, six of those coming from Sloan. Picking up her third win in net was freshman Carlotta Cartelli.
The team concludes its non-conference slate on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when they travel to Baton Rouge to face Southern. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
