LA Tech vs. TTU box
Cookeville, Tennessee ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" It looked like Louisiana Tech was going to win the match over Tennessee Tech in regulation, but the Golden Eagles were able to find the equalizer just minutes before stoppage.
Then it look as though the two teams were going to settle for the draw, but freshman Jenna Dages had other plans as the forward ripped a shot for the golden goal with only 50 seconds left to give the Lady Techsters a 2-1 road victory on Sunday afternoon at the Tech Soccer Field.
LA Tech (5-1-1) did not find many scoring opportunities in either overtime period until Dages intercepted a pass and dribbled up-field before taking a shot at the top of the 18 that went past the diving keeper.
"The game should have been won in the 90," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "We got hit with a counter punch, but the team brushed it off and kept going to the very end with the reward for their efforts being a great finish by Jenna Dages to win it. She was calm under pressure and deadly accurate. Jaelyn Peeples and Nomvula Kgoale were tremendous as well in the match."
It was a defensive battle from the get-go as the two squads combined for just three shot attempts in the first half.
However, in the 51st minute LA Tech applied pressure in the final third and earned its first corner kick of the match. Lisanne Kleygrewe took the corner and delivered it into the box where Makenna Johnson was taken down, drawing a whistle from the head ref to signal a foul.
Junior Haley Laque stepped up to take the penalty kick and even though the opposing keeper guessed correctly, the shot was able to sneak under her outstretched arms to give the Lady Techsters a 1-0 advantage.
It brought flashbacks to the regular finale last season when Laque connected on a penalty kick which gave the team the upset win over regular season champion North Texas and qualified them for the league tournament.
Tennessee Tech (3-2), a team off to its best start since 2004, refused to go away. The Golden Eagles had shot go off the near post in the 68th minute and an attempt from close range in the 79th minute get saved by a diving Kylee Seto.
The home team did break through in the 84th minute when a free kick into heavy traffic in the six found its way to Kalyn Pruett who netted in the header for the equalizer.
Senior Kathryn Sloan had a late attempt at a game-winner before the end of the second period, but her shot from 15 yards out was denied by a diving save which sent the match into overtime, the second OT of the season for LA Tech.
A little over 19 minutes of action later, Dages notched the second goal of her career. The first one came in the season opener and was also the game winner. Coincidentally, the last golden goal in double overtime came on the very same field against the same opponent on Sept. 15, 2010.
LA Tech held a 12-10 shot advantage in the dual with each team posting four shots on goal. Sloan paced the team with five shots.
Seto picked up career win No. 26, registering three saves to help the Lady Techsters come away with the road weekend sweep.
LA Tech will return home on Friday, Sept. 9 when it hosts I-20 foe ULM. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
