Lady Techsters Handed Tough, 3-1 Defeat at Marshall

Box Score Oct. 15, 2017

Final Stats

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Louisiana Tech women's volleyball team dropped a tough 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17) decision to Marshall on Sunday afternoon from the Cam Henderson Center.

The Lady Techsters (6-15, 1-6 C-USA) were led in the contest by senior Marta Monne, who once again, notched double-digit kills with 13, while adding nine digs. Rookie Gina Cortesi also provided solid play, contributing nine kills, 10 digs and a trio of blocks.

Fellow freshman Alyssa Zucco accumulated a team-best 23 digs starting from the libero spot, while senior Brooke Short led the team with 30 assists.

Marshall was led offensively by Madison Hill, who racked up a match-high 20 kills. Sophomore Jac'cara Walker chipped in 12 kills, while Madelyn Cole's 40 assists were a match-best.

Tech hit at just a .121 clip, while the Herd struck at .213 for the afternoon. Serving played a big factor in the contest as the Lady Techsters were held without a service ace, while Marshall notched six.

Tech started off strong in the hostile environment, staking an early 7-3 lead in the first set. However, the Herd offense got hot in the frame, utilizing an 8-0 run, to seize control of the set at 14-9. The Techsters made several subsequent runs, but could not eat up enough of the deficit, as Marshall staked a 25-19 triumph and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second, Tech boasted an early 8-6 lead, relying heavily on the efforts of Madeline Davis. The sophomore registered a pair of blocks along with two kills at that point, establishing her will early on. Marshall would have a reply, tying the set up at 10 after trailing by as many as three. Both teams would trade points until late in the set and with the score knotted at 19, Tech used one its more impressive runs of the year, rattling of six straight points in the clutch to even the match up at one.

The Lady Techster defense showed its capabilities in that winning frame, holding Marshall to its lowest attack percentage of the match at .071.

In the third set, Marshall roared out to an early 5-1 advantage. The Techsters made a nice push near the end of the frame using a 6-0 run to get back into the set. However, the earlier 13-point deficit proved to be too much as Marshall would close out the frame by a score of 25-16.

In the fourth and final set, Tech looked like it had brushed off the disappointment of dropping the third set, by standing tall against the Herd. Both teams went back and forth, before a 5-1 Marshall run provided a deciding advantage. The Herd would not trail the rest of the way, and complete the 3-1 victory with a 25-17 win in the fourth.

Tech returns to action with a pair of home matches next weekend. The Florida C-USA schools will come to town, with Tech squaring off with Florida Atlantic on Friday at 7 p.m., and facing FIU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
