LA Tech season stats
RUSTON -- After a combined 36 fouls, seven yellow cards, two red cards, a handful of injuries and some crazy weather to boot, Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion went the full 110 minutes and ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
There was very little action in the first period, playing under partly cloudy skies. LA Tech (10-2-5, 3-1-3 C-USA) and ODU (7-3-4 (4-1-2 C-USA) combined for just six shot attempts, none of which were dangerous.
Then came the second half.
After the rain started to fall, the Lady Techsters got on the scoreboard via a converted penalty kick by senior Haley Laque. The Monarchs equalized though eight minutes later.
LA Tech got to play a man-up after ODU's Jackie Stroud was issued her second yellow. That lasted into the first OT period when Lady Techster Elizabeth Doll received her second yellow.
Playing 10 vs. 10 in what became a driving rain ended in a draw, each team picking up one point.
"We expected a very physical game because Old Dominion has a strong, powerful team," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "We were able to stand up that. If we were able to add a little more technique in our final third, we could have won. Having said that, I am very proud of how the team stood up to a tall, aggressive ODU team.
"We've got three ties now which equates to one win. We played two very physical games this weekend and are pleased to come away with four points."
Wanting to put some speed up top, senior Au'Dresha Spates moved up top. With the sun still shining and the rain starting to fall in the 68th minute, goalkeeper Courtney Tompkins sent a ball past midfield that was flicked forward by freshman Elizabeth Doll.
Spates got inside position and was preparing for a 1v1 shot before she was taken down in the box. Laque stepped up and connected for her 5th career converted PK (program record).
ODU tied it up though in the 76th minute when a long ball from midfield was sent into the 18. Tompkins came charging off her line to make a sliding grab, but she was dispossessed after contact was made by a Monarch.
Natalie Johnson found the ball and connected into the open net as no foul was whistled. Tompkins was injured on the play and forced to leave the game. She was the second LA Tech player to be forced to exit due to injury -- junior Mylene Roy-Ouellet left in the first half due to a collision.
For the 13 minutes that the Lady Techsters got to play a man-up, its best chance came in the 86th minute when sophomore Stella Li had a 1v1 opportunity after a turnover. Her shot was saved.
Senior Nomvula Kgoale picked up the rebound and sent a shot at net, but her attempt was blocked. The ball was eventually played back to senior Olivia Millington who launched a long shot that clanked off the crossbar.
ODU had a slight edge in shot attempts, 17-15, and in corner kicks, 4-3. Li led the Lady Techsters with three shots, all coming on goal.
Tompkins registered six saves before leaving the game. Senior Faith Washington subbed in her place, recording five saves.
LA Tech has 12 total points going into next weekend when they are on the road for two matches. The first one comes on Friday, Oct. 19 at Middle Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
