LA Tech season stats
MIAMI -- The Louisiana Tech women's soccer team picked up a crucial three points in Conference USA action on Thursday night, shutting out FIU by a final score 2-0 at the Riccardo Silva Stadium.
Due to poor field conditions, the match was moved from the FIU Soccer Stadium to the football field. Both teams spent much of the first half getting accustomed to the large spacing and bounce of the turf.
LA Tech (9-2-4, 2-1-2 C-USA) would strike for two goals though in the first 15 minutes of the second period, once by senior Kailee Hervey off a rebound and another by senior Hannah McStay-Fenn on a first-touch strike from 20 yards out.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Tompkins and the back line did the rest, pitching their first shutout in almost a month and their first in C-USA play.
"This was a very important win on the road," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "It was a much better physical effort from the team tonight. They gave everything they had."
FIU (1-8, 0-4 C-USA) seemed to have the upper-hand through much of the first period, sending five shot attempts (four on goal) at the net, but Tompkins was in good position on all of them to make the saves.
The Lady Techsters did have a late push though, taking four shots in the final 15 minutes, but the match would stay nil-nil going into intermission.
Senior Olivia Millington had taken a couple of free kicks in the attacking third in the first period. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before the left-footer would get a good strike on one and that came in the 53rd minute.
The defender drilled a shot that clanked off the crossbar back into play. Her teammates, junior Mylene Roy-Ouellet and Hervey, closed in. Roy-Ouellet got a touch on it. Then it was Hervey who put it into the back of the net for her third goal of the year.
Six minutes later, it was another senior doing damage. The ball was chipped forward where Roy-Ouellet controlled it, then played it back to Hannah McStay-Fenn who blasted it from the top of the box into the upper 90. It was the midfielder's first goal of the season.
"We switched playing styles in the second half and it paid off," Sherry said. "We took advantage of wide areas and got more crosses into the box. We looked like a more dangerous team in the second half."
The Panthers were only able to generate two shots in the entire second half.
LA Tech finished with a 10-7 shot advantage. Eight different Lady Techsters registered shots. In net, Tompkins ended the night with five saves to help post her third blank sheet of the season.
The Lady Techsters will take their eight points into the next match which takes place on Friday, Oct. 13 against Charlotte. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
