RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-20) decision to conference-foe Charlotte Friday evening from the Thomas Assembly Center.
In its second to last home contest of 2017, the Lady Techsters (7-19, 2-10 C-USA) received solid play from seniors Marta Monne and Nia Myah Johnson, who notched 12 and 6 kills respectively. A pair of rookies in Carter Mirich and Marie-Helene Verlinden also stepped up offensively, combining for 12 kills on the evening.
Charlotte (18-9, 5-6 C-USA) used hitting percentages of .310, .485 and .452 to assert its will on the court Friday evening.
Janell Sparks led all hitters with 14 kills while hitting .375, while teammate Sydney Rowan finished up with 11 kills of her own. The 49ers out-blocked the Lady Techsters 12 to two on the evening.
Tech held its own in the first set, at one point boasting an 11-10 lead after Monne drove home her match-leading fifth kill early on in the frame. However, a 3-0 Charlotte run saw the 49ers draw ahead at 17-14. Tech could not withstand the rally and fell in the first, 25-19.
In the second, Charlotte lead throughout as a 15-5 surge to start the frame, silenced the Thomas Assembly Center crowd. The Techsters could not draw closer than nine the rest of the way, as Charlotte ran away with the second set, 25-11.
Tech played well to start the third, staking an early 10-8 lead in the frame after freshman Emily Boylan finessed home her only kill on her first attempt of the night. The rest of the frame was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than two, before Sparks threw down four straight kills to end the match.
With the loss, the Techsters were officially eliminated from postseason contention, but will look to rebound for their class of four seniors on Sunday's Senior Day at 1 p.m.
