LA Tech Takes on UTSA in Rematch

Feb. 10, 2017

GameDay Central | Game Notes

SAN ANTONIO, Texas ââ'¬" Coming off a one-point victory, Louisiana Tech will look to avenge a one-point loss suffered last month when they face off against UTSA on Saturday evening at 3 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.

With the victory over UTEP, LA Tech (17-8, 9-3 C-USA) held on to sole possession of second place in the league standings with six games remaining.

It was the second straight game the Bulldogs trailed at halftime and were able to pull off the comeback. Down by as much as nine points, the team got hot in the second half and ended up making 11 three-pointers to hand the Miners their first conference home loss of the season.

It marked the third straight contest of hitting double-digit shots from behind the arc. A big part of that on Thursday was redshirt senior Erik McCree who was a perfect 4-for-4.

The forward has been on fire from three-point range, making 11 out of 15 three-point attempts during this three game span. He continues to lead the team in scoring with an average of 17.5 points per game which ranks sixth in the league.

Another player who is equally hot from behind the arc is sophomore Jy'lan Washington. The forward came off the bench and nailed three three-pointers in El Paso. He has now hit 13 of his last 20 three-point attempts.

Setting up many of those shots is freshman DaQuan Bracey. The point guard had a career-high 10 assists in the recent win and is now just three assists away from setting the program record for total assists by a freshman.

Meanwhile, UTSA (11-13, 6-5 C-USA) has gotten back on track with back-to-back home wins over UAB and Southern Miss, this coming after a four-game losing streak. The Roadrunners have been dominant at home this season, recording a 10-1 mark, helping put them currently in a five-way tie for fifth in the standings.

UTSA continues to hang its hat on rebounding. The Roadrunners lead C-USA in rebounding offense with an average of 40.2 per game. Going further in depth and they average 13 offensive boards per contest which ranks 29th in the country.

Junior Jeff Beverly continues to lead the team in scoring with an average of 16.5 points per game. The forward scored a team-high 17 points in their most recent 57-51 victory over Southern Miss.

It was rebounding that was biggest difference maker in the last meeting between the two squads. UTSA outrebounded LA Tech, 46-34, and hit three late three-pointers to pull off the 69-68 upset.

Historically, the Bulldogs have had success playing in San Antonio. They are 5-1 at UTSA, including an 87-74 win last season despite not having the services of McCree who sat out the game due to injury.
