HOUSTON ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" The Louisiana Tech men's basketball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped on Saturday night as the Bulldogs fell on the road to the Rice Owls by a final score of 88-81 inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
LA Tech (21-9, 13-4 C-USA) shot extremely well in the game, going 48 percent from the field and 52 percent from three-point range, but the difference was turnovers and free throws.
The Bulldogs committed 20 turnovers, almost half of which came on travel calls, while Rice (20-9, 10-6 C-USA) only committed 12 and got to the free throw line 29 times, making 25 of them.
Both teams traded offensive punches in the early going, so much so that 18 players saw action in the first half and 17 of those players scored.
It was LA Tech though who was able to extend a lead first. A DaQuan Bracey three-pointer (one of his three for the game) from the corner forced a timeout by the Owls with the 'Dogs holding a 42-33 advantage with 5:51 to go in the first half.
However, Rice made four straight free throws to get back into it and ultimately take its first lead of the game at 49-47. Erik McCree made one free throw to put the Bulldogs down only one at intermission.
LA Tech later had its back against the ropes, down by seven with less than six minutes to play, but the team went on a 7-0 run to tie the game up behind a slam dunk by Derric Jean and an acrobatic bucket and a fifth three-pointer by Jacobi Boykins to make it 73-73.
From there though the Owls countered with an 8-0 run and were able to put the game away from the charity stripe.
Five Bulldogs scored in double figures ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" Boykins (17), Erik McCree (13), DaQuan Bracey (13), Jean (12) and Jalen Harris (12). The team outrebounded the Owls, 41-28, behind a career-high 15 boards from Omar Sherman.
Rice was led by Marcus Evans who scored a game-high 26 points. Fifteen of those points came at the foul line. The home team had three other players in double figures as well.
LA Tech now returns home for its final game of the regular season. The Bulldogs will face the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast by ASN.
It will be Senior Day where the team will honor their three seniors ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" McCree, Qiydar Davis and Da'Shawn Robinson.
