LA Tech season stats
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" The Louisiana Tech women's tennis team was not able to win the three-set matches like it did the day before, falling 5-2 to Samford on Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Complex.
LA Tech (3-3, 1-0 C-USA) lost the doubles point for the second straight day, but could only pick up singles wins on courts one and four, snapping its two-game winning streak.
The freshman duo of Nadja Manjon and Jill van den Dungen pulled off an impressive victory at the No. 3 spot, winning 9-7 in a tiebreaker, but Samford (3-1) registered victories at No. 1 and No. 2 to get out to a 1-0 lead.
Playing indoors and only three courts available, the top three singles spots started off first. Senior Jazmin Britos quickly knotted the team match up at 1-1 with her third straight victory in singles, a 7-5, 6-2 win over Ellie Gerlach at No. 1.
However, the Lady Techsters suffered tough losses at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Sonia Chen won the second set to force a third set, but ended up falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on court two.
On the flipside, senior Marta Sramkova got off to a strong start with a first-set win, but her opponent Nadine de Villiers rallied to grab a 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 decision to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 edge.
Positions four-six then took to the courts and Manjon continued her strong play, claiming her third straight singles victory with a dominating performance of 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 to slice into Samford's lead.
The home team regrouped though, picking up straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6.
LA Tech returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 when they host in-state foe McNeese State. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
