HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – For a second straight year the Louisiana Tech soccer team made the long trek to Huntington, West Virginia and for a second straight time they end up drawing with Marshall as Sunday's afternoon match ended in a 2-2 tie at Hoops Family Field.
Â
LA Tech (11-5-2, 4-3-2 C-USA) took the early lead in the first 10 minutes, but Marshall (5-8-3, 3-5-1 C-USA) was able to equalize just before halftime. The Herd then took their first lead in the game early in the second period. However, it was the Lady Techsters equalizing this time midway through the period.
Â
It was a back-and-affair on the pitch with both teams having opportunities to pull out the victory, but both teams instead came away with one point. For LA Tech, it brings its point total to 14 with one match remaining in conference play.
Â
"It was not a game for the feint-hearted," head coach
Kevin Sherry said. "It was end-to-end the whole game with chances for both teams.  I think we had the better of the chances but couldn't quite execute where it really mattered in and around the net.
Â
"A point on the road is always a good result, especially against a very good team like Marshall. I was very proud of our back line standing tall and putting their bodies on the line when needed."
Â
For the third time this season, the Lady Techsters scored the rare goal of making a direct score from a corner kick. Sophomore
Jaelyn Peeples had the previous two. This time, it was junior
Alexandra LeBlanc who connected in the eighth minute for her first career goal.Â
Â
It appeared as though LA Tech would head into the locker room with a one-goal advantage, but the Herd had other plans. With a minute to go, there was a high ball into the box and an ensuing scramble. After multiple rebounds, Gabby Powers sent the ball into the back of the net to tie it up at 1-1.Â
Â
Marshall then took the 2-1 lead in the 60th minute after Farah Abu-Tayeh cut in from the right and smashed a left-footed shot from the top of the box for the score.
Â
The lead only lasted about four minutes for the Herd as senior
Nomvula Kgoale delivered a power-shot of her own, drilling a right-footed shot from 20 yards into the corner to knot things up at 2-2. It marked her second goal of the season. Â
Â
LA Tech had opportunities from then on, but he final pass or the choice of shot was wrong. The Lady Techsters got off one shot attempt apiece in each overtime period, but could not convert for the golden goal.Â
Â
Both teams ended the 110 minutes with 12 shot attempts. Freshman forward
Connor Barker led the way for the Lady Techsters with four shots, all coming on goal. Getting the draw in net was senior
Courtney Tompkins who finished with five saves.
Â
LA Tech will conclude its regular season on Friday, Oct. 26 at home versus Southern Miss. It will be senior night and will kick off at 7 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
