LA Tech Stuns ODU, Advances to Semifinals

Lady Techsters score three unanswered goals to win 3-2

NORFOLK, Va. – For a second straight season Louisiana Tech trailed Old Dominion in the C-USA Tournament Quarterfinals.

And for a second straight season the Lady Techsters stunned the Monarchs, coming back from a 2-0 deficit this time to win the match 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament at the ODU Soccer Complex.

All seemed lost when No 4-seeded LA Tech (13-5-2) went down two goals early in the second period to No. 5-seeded Old Dominion (8-7-4) who were not only playing on its home pitch, but also riding a seven-match unbeaten streak which included a shutout win over the regular season champion North Texas.

However, the Lady Techsters were a resilient bunch.  They sliced the deficit in half on a header goal by Elizabeth Doll which gave them life.  Then with less than four minutes left in regulation, Hanna Banks equalized.  Then it was Mylene Roy-Ouellet who delivered the game-winning goal to make it three unanswered goals and the victory.

"What a tremendous achievement," head coach Kevin Sherry said.  "We started off the season kind of slow and we did not have that resiliency, but it has been growing and growing.  Tonight was the fulfillment of that growth.  Despite being down two goals, the team just never stopped.

"All of our goals were scored at the right time.  The clock would have caused major pressure so that goal by Doll was vital.  And then in the last 10 minutes, we threw Hanna forward and within two minutes of her playing forward she scored.  Sometimes you take a gamble and it pays off.  Tonight it paid off."

The story could have easily been one of missed opportunities for LA Tech.  They had the first scoring chance of the night in the sixth minute when Connor Barker dispossessed a defender on the left flank and passed it off to Roy-Ouellet who had free space to send a shot from inside the top of the box, but it was saved by the keeper.

Then in the 31st minute, the Lady Techsters had their first corner kick of the night.  Alexandra LeBlanc sent it into the 18 where Doll got a header on the ball in traffic, but the ODU keeper again came up with the diving save.

It appeared as though the match was going to go into halftime scoreless, but the Monarchs had other plans.  Kyra Ricks used her speed and dribbling to get around a man-marked defender in the corner, giving herself enough time to send a cross into the 18.  It was delivered perfectly to Raegan Tate who punched in the accurate header into the far corner from 10 yards out, giving ODU the 1-0 advantage.

The Monarchs quickly made it 2-0 two minutes into the second period when Ricks again got off a cross from the corner which found Amanda Nhek at the near post.  A one-touch flick into the back of the net from close range put the Lady Techsters seemingly out of reach.

LA Tech had other plans.

They got one goal back in the 55th minute on a set piece when Jaelyn Peeples sent a free kick from the right side of the midfield which found Doll.  The sophomore flicked her header into the net for her fourth goal of the year, and suddenly the visiting team was back in it.

With the clock ticking down, Banks was sent forward and it paid off massively in the 86th minute when the freshman got control of a deflection from the ODU defender, dribbled the ball forward and drilled the shot for the late equalizer, picking the perfect time to register her first career goal.

The Lady Techsters were not satisfied with just sending the match into overtime though.  They continued to push the ball forward early in the first OT period.

And once again, the team pulled off some late game magic like they have done all season.  It all started with a long ball off a free kick from Peeples.  ODU initially cleared it, but Stella Li sent it back into the 18 where Nomvula Kgoale flicked a header forward.

Out of nowhere, Barker charges in and possesses the ball before the ODU keeper could get to it off her line.  Barker raced it down, crossed it back into the six and Roy-Ouellet was Johnny-on-the-spot with the one-touch golden goal.

"Sometimes when you come back and tie it, you think you have done it, but you haven't," Sherry added.  "To take that extra step to win it, I was really proud that getting the tie was just the stepping stone.  We had a lot of great opportunities, outshooting Old Dominion.  They were a very experienced team at their peak and we were able to pull off the win."

LA Tech finished with 15 shots to ODU's 10.  Nine of those 15 shots were on goal, including all three by Roy-Ouellet who registered her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Picking up the win in net was Courtney Tompkins who was credited with two saves on the night.  It was the sixth OT match of the season for the Lady Techsters, four of which ended in a victory.

LA Tech advances to the C-USA Tournament semifinals for the third time in the five years.  They will take on No. 1 seed North Texas on Friday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. CT.  The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
