Lady Techsters play first game since win over Alabama on Dec. 2
RUSTON, La. – It's been more than two decades since the last time Louisiana Tech and Southeastern Louisiana met on the hardwood in women's basketball.
"Doo Wop (That Thing)" by Lauren Hill was the No. 1 song on the Billboard Top 100.
Gas prices were in a free fall, eventually reaching a national average of $1.04 per gallon by mid-December.
Brooke Stoehr – Lassiter at the time – was suiting up in a Lady Techster uniform as a true freshman for just her third collegiate game.
And the No. 2 ranked Lady Techsters were on their way to the program's 13th Final Four.
LA Tech won the game 88-55 on a late-November night in Hammond. And although Stoehr played 16 minutes in the victory, she doesn't recall too much from two decades ago.
"I was trying to recall something about that game," said Stoehr. "I don't remember who their coach was at the time. I honestly don't remember much of anything. It would have been a Nicholls State – Southeastern Louisiana road swing. I want to say we had Thanksgiving in Thibodeaux. I do remember that part, but not much specifically about the game."
Tech (5-3) and SLU (4-2) will reunite Wednesday night when the Lions travel to the Thomas Assembly Center for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.
The 20-year drought in the series is the longest for the Techsters against any DI program in the state of Louisiana. Tech owns a 7-5 advantage over SLU, including seven straight wins. Eleven of the 12 previous meetings came from 1974 through 1985.
And although it hasn't been 20 years, it does seem like it's been forever since Stoehr and Co. played a game. Tech's last contest was a 79-62 win over Alabama 10 days ago in Tempe, Arizona.
During the past nine days, the Lady Techsters have spent plenty of time working on themselves, something Stoehr said she hopes will pay dividends during the final 5-game non-conference games leading up to the start of Conference USA play in early January.
"We have been defending the heck out of it," said Stoehr. "We have been forcing them to talk defensively. Arizona State is really, really good, but I went back and watched (the film) and four of their first six shots were wide open in transition. We got back but we didn't talk.
"We have just gone back to working on some things from a defensive stand point. Being able to work on transition defense and half-court defense. Things you don't get to do when you are preparing day after day for game after game. We had a stretch where we played a bunch of games and didn't get to spend as much time on those types of things."
Tech continues to rely on a guard-heavy offensive attack. Kierra Anthony (21.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg), Taylor Stahly (12.6 ppg, 24-73 3-pointers) and Raizel Guinto (9.9 ppg, 13-29 3-pointers) combine to average 54 of Tech's 74.4 points per game through the first eight games of the season.
The trio own 17 of Tech's 24 double digit performances this season, including all six of its 20-plus point outbursts. Anthony leads all Conference USA players in scoring and is one of only two (North Texas' Terrell Bradley) averaging over 20 points a contest.
Stahly owns the nation's third longest streak of consecutive games with at least one three-pointer at 39, trailing only Central Michigan's Presley Hudson (47) and North Carolina State's Ace Konig (43). She has made at least one in every game in a Techster uniform dating back to the start of last season.
Guinto owns four double digit scoring games, including an impressive 17-point performance in the win over Alabama. She has already totaled more points this year (79) than in the entirety of her freshman campaign (64).
Southeastern Louisiana saw its four-game winning streak snapped in it last outing, a 59-47 loss to Xavier (N.O.) on Nov. 30. The Lions have wins over Mobile, Alcorn State, SMU and Jackson State and its second loss came at Alabama (88-40) in the season opener.
SLU is led by junior college transfer Celica Sterling (14.7 ppg), who hit a Moody Coliseum record eight three-pointers in the Lions win over SMU earlier this year. Sterling is 18-of-42 from beyond the arc and is SLU's only double digit scorer.
Fans can tune into the contest on the LA Tech Sports Network on KNBB 97.7 FM (Ruston), KRMD 100.7 FM (Shreveport/Bossier City), KRMD 1340 AM (Shreveport/Bossier City) and KJVC 92.7 FM with the pregame show starting at 6 p.m. Fans can also access a free audio stream though the Louisiana Tech X mobile app while watching a live video stream through a paid subscription to CUSATV.com.
