LA Tech season stats
MOBILE, Ala. ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬" The Louisiana Tech women's tennis team narrowly missed out on handing South Alabama its first home loss of the season, falling on the road by a final score of 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts.
LA Tech (5-6) had not been able to grab more than one point against USA (11-1) in each of the last three seasons. That was not the case in this spring matchup as the Lady Techsters picked up singles wins on courts two, four and five.
It was only the third time this season that an opponent had won at least three points versus the Jaguars. With the singles lineup split between the two squads, it was the doubles point won by the home team that proved to be the difference.
USA was able to strike first with that doubles point by grabbing wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. They then upped their lead to 3-0 in the match with singles victories from their top best players, undefeated Yu Fujioka on court three and nationally-ranked Alexandria Stiteler on court one.
The Jaguars were able to clinch with the completion of the next match ending on court six. However, the Lady Techsters swept the remaining three matches still on court.
The first point came courtesy of sophomore Nadja Manjon who bested Alina Zolotareva by a final score of 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 2 spot. It marked Manjon's seventh dual win of the season, helping to erase the bad taste in her previous match against ULM.
Senior Angela Lorenzo provided the second point for LA Tech on court five, coming back from a set down to force a third set tiebreaker against Maxine Palmen and ultimately winning 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7). She improved to 3-1 since her return from injury.
The last match on court was between junior Sonia Chen and Milka Pasanen on court four. Just like Lorenzo, Chen dropped the first set but stormed back win the second and third set 6-0 and 7-5, extending her winning streak to seven.
Next up for LA Tech is its third trip to the state of Texas this spring. This time they will take on Houston on Saturday, March 24 with first serve set for 1 p.m.
