LA Tech Wins I-20 Showdown in Impressive Fashion

Mylene Roy-Ouellet totaled five points in the 4-0 shutout victory

RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech women's soccer team came out on top in the I-20 showdown with ULM for a fourth straight year and they did so in an overpowering way by a final score of 4-0 on Sunday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.

There was no letdown after a Friday night victory like last weekend.  LA Tech (3-1-0) got on the scoreboard very early (in the third minute) and kept its foot on the gas, tacking on another goal in the first period and two more in the second period.

"I was very happy with the execution," head coach Kevin Sherry said.  "We focus a lot in our training about executing every simple thing to get better consistency.  Fair play to ULM.  They gave it 110 percent.  It was a challenge for us to overcome and I think we were able to execute our passing, especially going into the final third.

"We have to develop grit and determination in these kinds of test.  If we drop, we are not getting better and we are not learning.  I was really happy the team was determined tonight."

Doing much of the damage yet again was senior Mylene Roy-Ouellet who registered two goals and one assist on the night.  The striker apparently likes playing ULM (0-4-0) since she has totaled 6 goals and two assists versus the Warhawks the past four seasons, scoring in all four meetings.

Roy-Ouellet was responsible for the opening goal by the Lady Techsters.  Her brilliant one-touch finish from 10 yards out was compliments to a terrific cross by sophomore Amber Posthauer who made her first start of the season.

Later in the 26th minute, Roy-Ouellet was part of a passing combo with freshman Mazie Jones, laying the ball off inside the 18 to junior Stella Li who had a strong finish to the far post.  It was the midfielder's first goal of the year and the second of her career.

The score was 2-0 entering halftime as LA Tech allowed only one shot through the first 45 minutes by ULM, a shot that was easily saved by junior keeper Carlotta Cartelli making her second consecutive start in net.

Thirteen minutes into the second period though, the Lady Techsters tacked on their third goal.  It was an active Posthauer again along the wing who made a crisp pass to Jones who went out wide down the left flank to a charging freshman Connor Barker.  She dribbled into the 18 and drilled the ball past the keeper for her first career goal.

"I have been evaluating the left side during preseason and in these early games," Sherry said.  "Amber is starting to show the grit and eagerness.  She deserved a shot at that spot and she did really well."

LA Tech would add a fourth and final goal in the 69th minute when Barker had another rocket shot come off her foot, but the Warhawk keeper made the save.  However, Roy-Ouellet was there to clean up the rebound from short range for her second straight multi-goal performance.

The home team (21 players seeing action) ended up with a 16-8 shot advantage, 11 of those coming on goal.  Roy-Ouellet led the way with five shots, four being on goal.

Cartelli recorded three saves for her second straight shutout.  She now has six career shutouts, good for fifth most in program history.

After finishing the four-game home stand with three victories and one defeat, the Lady Techsters will now begin a three-game road stretch.  It starts with their first road test of the season on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at Missouri State.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
