LA Tech and FIU Play to 2-2 Draw

Lady Techsters now have seven points in C-USA play

MIAMI – The Louisiana Tech soccer team was not able to provide any late-game magic on Sunday afternoon, ultimately playing to a 2-2 draw with FIU at FIU Soccer Stadium.

LA Tech (9-4-1, 2-2-1 C-USA) twice had a one-goal lead, but both times were erased as FIU (0-12-1, 0-4-1 C-USA) managed to equalize soon thereafter.  Both teams walked away from the double overtime match with one point.

"We did not have much energy left for a Sunday road game, but what we did have in the tank we gave it," head coach Kevin Sherry said.  "Mistakes at the back and not finishing the easy chances concluded with a tie.  We struggled with physical and mental tiredness, yet we had a lot of open shots at goal but just couldn't hit the target."

The Lady Techsters struck first in the 22nd minute when senior Nomvula Kgoale stepped up to take a free kick just outside of the 18.  She drilled a shot that somehow went through the wall and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

With a 1-0 lead, LA Tech was forced to change goalkeepers as junior Carlotta Cartelli had a hard collision with a Panther forward.  Senior Courtney Tompkins came on in her place in net and kept FIU off the scoreboard going into halftime.

A series of scoring opportunities came for the Lady Techsters in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but they were not able to produce an insurance goal.  FIU took advantage of that when in the 71th minute Rayquel Berry dribbled back into the middle and struck a sliding shot that bent perfectly into the upper right-hand corner.

LA Tech got aggressive again and it paid off in the 77th minute, scoring off another set piece.  Junior Jaelyn Peeples took the corner kick and after a header shot was blocked by Kgoale, senior Mylene Roy-Ouellet was there to clean things up off the deflection.  It was her sixth goal of the season and the 26th goal of her career.

Unfortunately, the new lead did not last long as the Panthers equalized again less than two minutes later.  It was again Berry who this time found the open net off a deflection.

The match would go into overtime, the third time this season LA Tech went into extra time.  And they had a plethora of opportunities to register a golden goal but could not do so.

LA Tech finished with a 24-15 shot advantage.  Kgoale led the way with a career-high eight shot attempts while Roy-Ouellet recorded six.  Nine of the total shots were on goal.

Makenna Johnson, Maycie McDougal and Jaelyn Peeples played the full 110 minutes.  Tompkins spent 88 minutes in net, recording two saves.

The Lady Techsters will conclude their three-game road stretch next weekend when they travel to Houston to face the Rice Owls on Sunday, Oct. 7.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT.
