Lady Techsters travel to Huntington for fifth time in six years
HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Louisiana Tech will embark on a two-game Conference USA road swing this weekend, starting with a match-up against Marshall Thursday at 5 p.m. CST at the Cam Henderson Center.
Tech (10-9, 2-4 C-USA) is coming off its most dominate performance of the season in its 88-51 win over Charlotte Saturday. However, the Lady Techsters have been inconsistent during C-USA play and head coach Brooke Stoehr knows the road trip is important.
"It's big," said Stoehr. "It's another week to get better. We are still early in conference play. We are six games in and obviously we are sitting at 2-4. We are not where we want to be but we have to continue to focus on getting better. Are we getting better each day which will allow us to be really good in February and March. If this team can take what we did Saturday and build on that on the road, then I will be happy."
The Thundering Herd (10-8, 4-1 C-USA) are one of the surprises through the first three weeks of league play, winning four of their first five Conference USA games. Marshall is coming off a two-game road sweep against Florida Atlantic and FIU and also has league wins against Old Dominion and Charlotte. Its one loss came at WKU.
"It's a tough road trip," said Stoehr. "We go to Marshall. They are sitting at 4-1 and playing with confidence. They have scored the ball well. They have one of the league's best scorers in Shayna Gore on the perimeter who is an experienced senior who has played a lot of minutes for them. That game is going to be tough. And then of course we have to go to WKU which has always been a difficult place to play."
Marshall is led by Gore, averaging 18.3 points per game while shooting 41 percent (57-140) from the three-point line and 85 percent from the free throw line. She also leads the team in assists and steals. Taylor Porter is the Thundering Herd's other double digit scorer, averaging 11.2 points per game while hitting 36 percent (34-94) of her three-pointers and 91 percent of her free throws.
Louisiana Tech got balanced scoring in both of its games last week as three Lady Techsters scored in double figures in the loss to Old Dominion while five different players reached the mark in the win over Charlotte. Kierra Anthony continues to pace Tech at 23.2 points a contest.
Amber Dixon has recorded double figures in three of the last four games, averaging almost 14 points a contest during the stretch which includes a career-high 20 points against Old Dominion. Senior Taylor Stahly broke out of her scoring slump with a career-high 23 points against Charlotte, hitting 7-of-12 three-pointers in the win.
Tech has also seen improvements on the boards. The Lady Techsters outrebounded Old Dominion by eight and Charlotte by 18 in its two games last week.
Tech leads the series against Marshall 3-2, including a 74-65 victory last season. This marks the fifth time in six seasons that LA Tech has traveled to Huntington.
The contest can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on KNBB 97.7 FM and KJVC 92.7 FM with the pregame show starting at 4:30 p.m. A live video stream can be accessed with a paid subscription to CUSATV.com.
