LA Tech Grabs Much-Needed Win on Senior Day

Lady Techsters beat Thundering Herd, 3-2, in comeback fashion

RUSTON – In Louisiana Tech's first home match of the season, the team got two equalizers and a late game-winner to pull out a win.

And in the Lady Techsters final home match of 2019, the same sequence happened as Klesha Darroux netted both equalizers and Jaelyn Peeples registered a late goal for the game-winner in what ended as a 3-2 victory over Marshall on Sunday afternoon at Hoss Garrett Stadium.

LA Tech (12-4-2, 4-4-1 C-USA) was in desperation mode, coming off two shutout losses last weekend and only two games remaining to try to amass enough points to qualify for a sixth straight Conference USA Tournament.

They were in desperation mode for the majority of the game on Sunday too versus Marshall (4-13-0, 2-7-0 C-USA).  The Thundering Herd got up 1-0 in the first half and then 2-1 in the second half.

However, Darroux came off the bench and picked a great time to net her first goals of the entire season.  And it was not just one, but two, with the second one coming with 10 minutes to go.

Then with a little over five minutes to go before the end of regulation, the senior Peeples, who made her program-record 77th career start, gave the Lady Techsters the victory.

"We made two mistakes and got punished, that is how good Marshall is," said head coach Kevin Sherry.  "The ups and downs of the game were incredible.  Jaelyn and Stella together, there was a great flow to the game.

"The senior group has been our core for a long time.  They pulled it out of the hat when the chips were down.  They have never given up and they didn't today."

Marshall got on the scoreboard very quickly, going on a counter attack in the seventh minute with Alyssa Totzke flying up the right flank.  She crossed it to Marah Abu-Tayeh who beat Carlotta Cartelli on the 1v1 to put the Herd on top early.

LA Tech was able to equalize in the first half as Autumn Woodard had possession and dribbled up the end line before passing it off to Darroux who fired the one-touch shot from 10 yards out into the back of the net in the 28th minute.

Marshall retook the lead in a very similar way from its first goal.  In the 53rd minute, Abu-Tayeh got behind the back line up the left flank and assisted on the goal by Julia Schukle who sent it to the far post from 12 yards away.

The Lady Techsters attacked again and again, getting set piece after set piece but no goal.  Finally in the 81st minute, senior Kaylee Zettler was moved up top and got possession of the ball at the top of the box and headed it off to Darroux who fired it past the keeper again to tie things up at 2-2.

Three minutes later, Peeples became the hero.  After Quinn Parks dumped the pass off to the midfielder, Peeples fired a rocket from 30 yards away inside the far post for the game-winner.

It marked the sixth straight victory for the Lady Techsters on a senior day.  A dramatic one at that as all five seniors, who have amassed 53 victories over the last four years, started and played a huge role.

LA Tech now has 13 points and is in a three-way tie for sixth place going into the final match of the season which comes on Friday, Nov. 1 against Southern Miss.  Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

The Lady Techsters held a 21-10 shot advantage and a 10-5 corner kick advantage.  Cartelli registered three saves in the match, the third and final one being a crucial one as she dove to her right and stopped the Herd from scoring their third goal.
