Marshall Defeats Tech Despite Boylan’s Historic Night

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Emily Boylan made Louisiana Tech history by hitting .786, but the Lady Techsters couldn't overcome a furious Marshall attack in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-21) road defeat.

The Herd hit .274 as a team, led by Destiny Leon's .462 with 8 kills. Sarah Schank led Marshall with 11 kills.

Boylan's .786 attack percentage ranks 5th in Lady Techster history (min. 10 attempts) and is Tech's best since 1993. Marie-Helene Verlinden provided Boylan with as much help as she could, totaling six kills with five blocks.

"I felt we played hard, but our errors killed us and Marshall did a great job capitalizing on them. Our middles tried their hardest to carry us offensively, but at the end of the day they needed help that they just didn't get tonight," said LA Tech head coach Amber McCray. "Emily Boylan played phenomenally, leading us with 11 kills while hitting a .786, and that is a bright spot we can build on moving forward."

Marshall pulled away early in the first set to open the match with a 25-17 win. The Herd overcame a sterling first set effort from Boylan and Verlinden, who combined to post nine kills with just one error in the frame.

Lady Techster miscues came back to bite them in the second set, leading to a 25-13 Marshall win. Tech hit just .056 in the frame after posting 10 kills with 8 attacking errors. Verlinden and Boylan continued to play well with six more kills between them.

Tech battled in the third set of the day, taking a 12-8 lead after a kill from Molly Watkins and a service ace from Morgan Currie. The Herd roared back, however, going on a six-point run to take a 14-12 lead. The Techsters cut the deficit to 18-17 a block from Verlinden and Madeline Davis, but Marshall pulled away to earn a 25-21 win.

Carter Mirich led the Tech back line with 14 digs, and Currie provided 10 more. Abigail Hildenbrand and Mia Prostran combined for 27 assists.

The Lady Techsters return to action on Sunday when they square off with Middle Tennessee at 1 p.m. The match will be Tech's first of the year on ESPN+.
