HOUSTON, Texas – If last year's contest between Louisiana Tech and Houston is any indication, fans at the Fertitta Center are in for some excitement Sunday when the Lady Techsters and the Cougars face off at 2 p.m.
The contest can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on KNBB 97.7 FM with the pregame show starting at 1:30 p.m. Fans can also watch a live video stream through a paid subscription at UHCougars.com.
The 2018-19 version of LA Tech-Houston turned into one that Lady Techster fans will remember for a long time. And Cougar fans want to forget.
Kierra Anthony scored a program and Conference USA single game record 50 points – 44 coming after halftime – to lead Tech to a 100-88 overtime victory in Ruston. Tech trailed by as many as 16 points late in the third quarter before rallying for the memorable win.
Anthony is gone as are Houston's top players from last year's team. Thus, this year's version will have a significantly different personnel look.
Tech (5-2) has won three straight games after Thursday night's 79-54 victory over McNeese State in a contest that saw the Lady Techsters start slow before scoring 50 points in the second half. Defensively, Tech forced 30 turnovers and held McNeese State to just 36 percent shooting.
Head coach Brooke Stoehr's team will need a similar defensive performance against a UH team that boasts four double digit scorers. Despite the absence of Jasmyne Harris (14.6 ppg thru the first five games; no longer on roster), Houston still gets double digit scoring from Dorian Branch (12.3 ppg), Tatyana Hill (10.6 ppg), Â Jasmine Blackshell-Fair (10.0 ppg) and Dymond Gladney (9.9 ppg).
Houston (4-5) already posted an impressive non-conference win over Oklahoma (85-69) and the Cougars are 3-1 at home this year.
Tech has only one double digit scorer in Keiunna Walker (13.3 ppg) but the Lady Techsters do boast a balanced offensive attack. Seven players besides Walker are averaging 5.0 points or more with all eight of the aforementioned players recording at least one double digit scoring game this season.
Tech also got a boost with the return of sophomore Bri Harris who saw action in Thursday's win after missing the first six games of the season due to injury.
The Lady Techsters lead the all-time series against Houston 6-3.
