BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Louisiana Tech baseball team maintained its status as the hottest team in the nation, winning its 10
th consecutive game and clinching the weekend series over Florida Atlantic behind a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon from FAU Baseball Stadium.
Â
LA Tech (24-10, 10-4 C-USA) extended its winning streak to double digits for the first time since the 2007 season, while claiming its seventh consecutive Conference USA road series win dating back to last season. The Bulldogs handed FAU (23-11, 11-3 C-USA) its first C-USA series loss of the year.
Â
"I'm so proud of our guys for hanging in there against a rally good arm today," head coach
Lane Burroughs said. "We held the course and stuck with it. Very proud of
Logan Robbins for working out of some tough jams. I thought
David Leal was as sharp as he's been all year – he looked like the
David Leal from last year.
Seth White got the big triple down the line and proved to be the difference in the game – proud of the at-bats he's been putting together."
Â
Since beginning its league slate with a sweep vs. Southern Miss, the Bulldogs have rattled of 10 wins in their last 11 conference games.
Â
Tech received a two-out RBI triple from
Seth White in the second inning, and the Tech pitching staff held the rope the rest of the way, as starter
Logan Robbins (4-2) and relievers
David Leal and
Braxton Smith held FAU to just one run on four hits on the afternoon.
Â
Robbins was solid in picking up his fourth win of the year, pitching into the sixth inning (5.2 innings pitched), while allowing just two hits. The left-hander walked three and struck out three, and held the Owls scoreless across his 86 pitches.
Â
Senior
David Leal entered in relief of Robbins and retired the first seven batters he faced, before FAU got on the board via a solo home run to right from Andru Summerall in the bottom of the ninth. After the home run, Tech called once again on reigning C-USA Pitcher of the Week in
Braxton Smith, who allowed one hit, but recorded a pair of strikeouts en route to his ninth save of the season.
Â
Leal went 2.2 innings, allowing just the one hit on the solo home run, but was sharp, needing just 32 pitches (22 strikes) to strike out three and did not walk a batter.
Â
FAU put together its real only offensive threat in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with two outs after a pair of walks and a single. However, Robbins buckled down and induced a flare to right field that
Mason Robinson tracked down, and made an athletic sliding catch in foul territory, keeping FAU off the board.
Â
Meanwhile, the Tech offense did just enough against FAU starter, Mike Ruff (4-1), handing the right hander his first loss of the season. Ruff pitched seven complete innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out nine.
Â
Tanner Huddleston went 2-for-4 with a triple, while the bottom of the order in
Mason Robinson,
Chris Clayton and
Seth White combined for three hits and a pair of runs scored.
Â
The Bulldogs will look to complete the weekend sweep of the Owls tomorrow afternoon with a first pitch set for 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT from Boca Raton. Tech is slated to throw left-hander
Logan Bailey, while FAU will counter with right-hander Jon Jon Kostantis.
