RUSTON, La. – When Louisiana Tech's five seniors stepped off the field Wednesday night following a loss to UL-Lafayette, they never dreamed it would be their final time to play at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
However, Mother Nature had different plans.
Following the tornados that devastated the Ruston community and many of the Louisiana Tech Athletic Facilities, including the Lady Techster Softball Complex, this senior class and their teammates will play their final "home" games in Monroe at the ULM Softball Complex.
Tech (36-13, 14-4 C-USA) will host WKU (33-9, 15-3) in a match-up of No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the Conference USA standings. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. and Sunday's single game at 12 p.m. Admission is free.
Senior Day ceremonies will take place Sunday upon return to Ruston following completion of the game at the Davison Athletics Complex in the Bulldog football team meeting room.
"The situation isn't ideal but what I've been so proud of is the fact our team hasn't hung their heads," said Tech head coach
Mark Montgomery. "Sure, there have been tears. I think anyone who loves this community and this school and their program has shed some the last two days.
"But they understand it's a situation that can't be helped. They have an opportunity to still accomplish all of their goals. They have really handled this well. I know our team will come out and play this series with everything it has. I hope our fans will come out and support them. I hope we see people we have never seen at a game before come out and support them this weekend.
"We are so appreciative of Molly Fichtner and Scott McDonald and all of the ULM administration for being such great neighbors during this time. It's been amazing."
This year's senior class is comprised of
Berkley Calapp,
Jazlyn Crowder,
Krystal De La Cruz,
Preslee Gallaway and
Morgan Turkoly. The group has led Tech to levels of success that the program hasn't seen in some time, recording 140 wins (most by a senior class in 20 years) and 57 league wins (most by any C-USA program over the last four years).
"This senior class will be remembered for a lot of things," said Montgomery. "They have been unbelievable ambassadors for this school in the classroom, around the community and on the field. They have led the program to a level it hasn't seen in some time. Every senior class is special in its own way and this one is no exception."
WKU (33-9, 15-3) enters the weekend with a six-game winning streak and a one-game lead in the Conference USA standings. Tech (36-13, 14-4) is tied with North Texas for second place with two regular season weekends remaining.
The Lady Toppers are led by a trio of pitchers that boast impressive numbers. Kelsey Aikey (12-6, 1.96 ERA), Shelby Nunn (6-0, 2.22 ERA) and Kennedy Sullivan (15-3, 3.13 ERA) have combined for a 2.54 team ERA and 347 strikeouts in 278.2 innings of work.
Offensively, catcher Kendall Smith (.361, 12 HR, 44 RBI) leads the team while Shannon Plese (.352, 5 HR, 28 RBI), Jordan Vorbrink (.340, 2 HR, 11 RBI) and Jordan Thomas (.284, 7 HR, 27 RBI) provide plenty of production. WKU and Tech ranks No. 1 and 2 in C-USA in team batting average.
The games can be seen live on CUSATV.com.
