RUSTON, La. – Fresh off a historic season that saw it win 45 games, capture both the Conference USA regular season and tournament titles and compete in the NCAA Regionals, Louisiana Tech has added a pair of small school transfers to its roster.
LA Tech head coach
Mark Montgomery announced the addition of outfielder Madie Green (Keller, Texas/Henderson State/Timber Creek HS) and pitcher Breanna Hernandez (Round Rock, Texas/Temple College/Cedar Ridge HS).
Montgomery has hit gold in recent years with small school transfers, including 2019 Conference USA Player of the Year
Jazlyn Crowder (Tyler JC) and two-time first team all-league pitcher
Krystal De La Cruz (Texas A&M International).
After prepping at Timber Creek High School in Texas, Green played the past two seasons at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas where she was a two-time all-Great American Conference selection.
"Graduating two senior outfielders last season, we knew we needed to bring in some quality depth at that position," said Montgomery. "Madie does just that as she has been an everyday player for Henderson State the last two seasons.Â
"She is a veteran who excelled at Henderson both offensively and defensively. Madie will be able to come in and compete immediately for paying time and certainly brings with her the confidence and experience of an upperclassman."
As a freshman, she led the Reddies with 10 home runs, 40 runs scored and 38 RBI while earning the Freshman Newcomer of the Year for Henderson State. She followed that season up with a sophomore campaign that saw her hit .293 with seven home runs, 31 RBI and 24 runs. She played in 110 of the 111 games the past two years at Henderson State.
"I chose Louisiana Tech Softball because I felt a sense of community and family within this school and this program," said Green. "After my visit with the coaches, I just had that strong feeling that Louisiana Tech is where I am supposed to be. I just can't wait to become a part of this softball program and represent Louisiana and the town of Ruston."
Green was a four-time all-district performer at Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth where she also earned first team all-state and all-metro as a senior when she batted .421 with a school record 11 home runs and 51 RBI.
Hernandez was a standout at Cedar Ridge High School before signing with Incarnate Word and playing her freshman season in the Southland Conference. She then transferred to Temple College in Texas for her sophomore campaign.
"Just like in the outfield, we lost two great arms in the circle," said Montgomery. "Bre brings quality depth at that position. She has been a pitcher at the Division I level her freshman year, as well as pitching her junior college team to the World Series last season.Â
"She will not only add depth to the circle, but gives maturity and experience that we desperately need in that position."
Hernandez recorded a 27-3 mark and a 2.53 earned run average in the circle while working 177 innings for Temple College, helping lead the team to a 49-11 record and a fifth place finish in the NJCAA World Series. She was named first team NFCA All-American and second team NJCAA All-American while registering 145 strikeouts and 19 complete games.
"I chose Louisiana Tech University because as soon as I stepped onto the campus I caught a sense of ownership," said Hernandez. "I knew I wanted to be a part of this great program from the moment I stepped into the campus. Even with the distraction from the tornado, the town of Ruston held the sense of a proud community and I want to be a part of that proud community."
As a freshman at Incarnate Word she led the staff with 24 appearances and 20 starts in the circle, tossing 11 complete games. She was 5-14 with 46 strikeouts. As a prep star at Cedar Ridge High School, she led the program to three straight district titles and was the three-time district pitcher of the year as well as the district newcomer of the year as a freshman.
Green and Hernandez will join catcher Brooke Diaz (Eagle Pass, Texas/Eagle Pass HS), utility Jordyn Manning (West Monroe, La./Ouachita HS), pitcher Audrey Pickett (Aurora, Colorado/Tyler Junior College), infielder Lexi Pope (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial HS) and infielder Bailey Wright (Morrilton, Arkansas/Wonderview HS) who all signed during the early period.
