NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Louisiana Tech Soccer team continues to rewrite the record books so far during this 2019 season.
Â
Thanks to free-kick extraordinaire
Jaelyn Peeples and goal-seeking
Autumn Woodard, the Lady Techsters continued their hot start by downing Northwestern State by a final score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
Â
It marked LA Tech's (6-0-0) seventh straight road win as a program, six of those coming this season. Meanwhile, the senior Peeples registered her first career multi-goal game, scoring on two direct free kicks, and the sophomore Woodard set a new program record by scoring in her fifth straight game.
Â
"Today was a hard-fought game with two evenly-matched teams," head coach
Kevin Sherry said. "It was extremely hot and both teams did well to keep the intensity high in very difficult conditions.
Â
"The difference today for us was Jaelyn with those two free kicks. It was tough to break NSU down and create opportunities and so set plays was about the only answer for us today. Defensively, NSU put a lot of high balls into our box, especially in the second half, but Carlotta and company dealt with them admirably."
Â
The earliest goal of the season for the Lady Techsters came in just the third minute. An NSU (0-4-1) foul meant a set piece opportunity for LA Tech. Normally assisting on these free kicks, Peeples launched her shot into the back of the net from 30 yards out.
Â
The lead was short-lived though as the Lady Demons equalized 10 minutes later after Jayme Paynes shot was saved by
Carlotta Cartelli, but Jalen Donaldson cleaned up the rebound to knot the match up at 1-1.
Â
That would be the score going into halftime with LA Tech holding a slim 6-5 shot advantage at the midway point in Natchitoches.
Â
In the 54th minute, LA Tech went back on top and it started with a throw-in by
Alexandra LeBlanc from the left side.Â
Elizabeth Doll got possession and dribbled to the end line then cut back, sending a pass to Woodard who had the one-touch finish from six yards out.
Â
It was the transfer's team-leading eight goal of the season, all coming in the last five games. Four Lady Techsters previously held the record of scoring in four straight contests.
Â
LA Tech tacked on an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Peeples scored again on a set piece, a direct free kick this time from 20 yards away.Â
Â
The team totaled just eight shots, but made three of those count. NSU tallied 12 shots, eight of those coming on goal.  The senior keeper Cartelli was superb in net, registering her third win of the season with a career-high seven saves.
Â
LA Tech now looks forward to its first home match of the 2019 season which comes on Friday, Sept. 6 against McNeese State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ruston Junior High School.
Â
"We would really appreciate a helping hand from the community this Friday," said Sherry. "Our ladies have been forced to sacrifice a lot this year and so I'm asking the public to come out to watch and be out 12th player on the field."
