BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Louisiana Tech completed a road sweep in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon, overpowering UAB by a final score of 72-58 inside Bartow Arena.
Â
LA Tech (15-5, 6-2 C-USA) hit 10 three-pointers, four of which came from lefty sharpshooter
Kalob Ledoux, and controlled the glass with a +15 rebounding margin to help pull off the team's fourth conference road victory.
Â
It marked just the second time the Bulldogs have ever won at UAB (12-9, 3-5 C-USA) out of nine tries and it is the first time they have ever swept the Middle Tennessee-UAB road swing.
Â
"This is what you want in a team, to be able to have guys lift each other up and have different guys step up and take what the game gives you," said head coach
Eric Konkol. "UAB was really trying to keep the paint clogged up and I thought our guys did a great job of finding good shots from the perimeter. We have a lot of good players that can contribute in a lot of different ways.
Â
"Road games in conference are really the most challenging things. This has been a really challenging place for us in the past. To be able to get two wins on the road this week is really important for this team."
Â
It was the three-ball that got the Blazers off to a strong start, making their first two to open the game up with a 6-0 lead.Â
Â
And it was the three-ball that got the Bulldogs rolling offensively as four of their final five made field goals of the first half came from beyond the arc.Â
Derric Jean, Coe Williams and Ledoux were draining the threes that gave LA Tech a 35-27 advantage at halftime.Â
Â
The second half was more about defense. The 'Dogs, wearing their throwback uniforms, allowed just eight points through the first 10 minutes of the stanza, opening up a 49-35 lead, and then put the game away by making six straight field goals from five different players.
Â
The dagger came with 6:22 to go when Ledoux buried his fourth three-pointers in front of the team bench to put the team up, 64-41. He finished with a game-high 17 points and
DaQuan Bracey added 12 as LA Tech shot 46 percent from the field and 39 percent from deep.
Â
Mubarak Muhammed had lots of help on the glass today. The senior had six boards while
Andrew Gordon and
JaColby Pemberton each had six as well.Â
Â
"We lost the turnover margin, but we gained quite a bit in the rebounding margin against a very good rebounding team," said Konkol. "I thought we had some really quality possessions, guarding and keeping the ball in front and challenging shots. It was a total team effort on the glass."
Â
UAB was limited to 39 percent shooting. Kassim Nicholson and Jalen Benjamin registered 15 and 13 points, respectively.Â
Â
Next up for LA Tech is a home matchup against Charlotte on Thursday, Jan. 30. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court.
