RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech tennis team made it a sweep of its home weekend, downing McNeese State by a final score of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Ruston Sports Complex.
Â
After a two-hour delay due to overnight rain, LA Tech (3-3) grabbed the doubles point and got four more points from singles action. This came a day after handling another in-state foe at home.Â
Â
"I'm really proud of the team this weekend getting two quality wins," said head coach
Amanda Stone. "I'm especially proud of them today, beating McNeese after getting shut out by them a couple of years ago. That's a huge flip in a short amount of time.
Â
"Our intensity was good and our level was consistent throughout. We were close in sweeping all the singles. Ana and Alexia had great weekends. We have a lot of positives to keep building on throughout the team and the season."
Â
McNeese State (0-3) was at a disadvantage from the get-go as the Cowgirls had only five players available.Â
Â
With the Lady Techsters getting the automatic win by default on court three, they needed just one win from either court one or two to grab the opening point in doubles. That victory came from a new duo in
Nadja Manjon and
Alexia Romero who reeled off five straight games to win, 6-2 at No. 1.
Â
With McNeese forced to default at No. 6 in singles, LA Tech had a 2-0 lead before action started on courts one through five.Â
Â
Coming out strong of the gates was sophomore
Ana Jover who dominated Carlotta Romito at the No. 2 position, giving up just one game to win it 6-0, 6-1.Â
Â
And for a second straight day, the clincher was provided by the freshman Romero who got the best of Matilde Mulatero at the No. 4 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. She improved to a perfect 4-0 in dual singles and is riding a six-game winning streak dating back to the fall season.
Â
The fifth and final point came from sophomore
Ilana Tetruashvili who registered a 7-6, 6-1 win against Sofia San Moreno on court three.Â
Â
The Cowgirls recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1 and a victory in a super-breaker at No. 5.Â
Â
Next up for LA Tech are two road matches next weekend. They will play at Sam Houston State on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. and then at Prairie View A&M on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.
