HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss will open Conference USA play Saturday afternoon when the Lady Techsters travel to Reed Green Coliseum to face the Golden Eagles.
Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. and the contest can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on KNBB 97.7 FM with the pregame show slated to start at 3:30 p.m. The game can also be seen on CUSATV.com with a paid subscription.
Both teams enter the contest with identical 8-3 records through the non-conference portion of their respective schedules. Tech enters with a three-game winning streak following a 67-54 win over Arkansas State on Sunday while Southern Miss has won two of its last three, including a 71-59 win over Faulkner.
This marks the 17th meeting ever between the two programs with Tech holding a slim 9-7 advantage. However, the Lady Techsters are only 2-4 all-time in Hattiesburg, including three straight losses.
"We haven't won there yet since we have been here," said Tech head coach Brooke Stoehr. "So hoping year four we will be able to get a W. We haven't lost to them at home, but haven't won there. It has been a series where the home team has protected their court.
"It's a tough place to play. They play well at home. I think they are a sleeper, a dark horse in our league right now. I think they have older players that understand how to win. They have had some good wins, and I think they are playing some really good basketball."
Tech and Southern Miss have played three common opponents this year with both teams having defeated Southeastern Louisiana and both teams having lost at Houston. Southern Miss defeated Ole Miss at home while Tech fell to the Rebels in Oxford.
Southern Miss is led by one of the league's top offensive players in senior guard Shonte Hailes, who is averaging 16.8 points per game. Hailes also leads a USM defense that is allowing opponents only 59.7 points per game and is forcing an average of 21 turnovers a contest.
Respect Leaphart complements Hailes offensively, averaging 13.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Tech is led by a balanced offensive attack. Keiunna Walker (10.9 ppg, 15 steals), Amber Dixon (10.4 ppg, 18 steals), Raizel Guinto (8.5 ppg, 20 steals), Anna Larr Roberson (8.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Grayson Bright (7.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg) have been the most consistent contributors offensively through the first two months of the season.
Saturday's contest marks the fifth time in the last seven years that LA Tech and Southern Miss have opened Conference USA play against one another.
