Techsters Fall in First Match of the New Season

LA Tech returns to action on Oct. 10 at Abilene Christian

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Tech Soccer team was not able to take advantage of its scoring opportunities, falling 2-0 to UL-Lafayette on Friday night at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer Complex.

LA Tech (0-1), playing in its first match of the new season, took twice as many shots as UL-Lafayette (4-3), but were not able to find the back of the net.

On the flipside, the Ragin' Cajuns, playing in their seventh match of the year, capitalized on two of their five shots which produced goals in the first half.

"We learned a lot about ourselves today," said head coach Kevin Sherry.  "Our first game and their seventh and you could tell.  The first half started brightly, but the rest of the half we were dominated physically.

"The second half was much better because we played a more physical style and we started to win more individual battles and created a lot more opportunities.  The second half was something we can build on and adopt as a style of play moving forward."

The Lady Techsters came out with a lot of energy, possessing much of the ball through the first 20 minutes of action.

However, the Cajuns struck on just their second shot attempt of the night when in the 29th minute Una Einarsdottir flicked a header off a cross that had just enough pace on it to sneak past the keeper.

ULL doubled its lead just nine minutes later at the 38-minute mark when Lizzie Mayfield's crossing shot scored inside the far post.

LA Tech applied more pressure in the second half, taking seven of its 10 shots in the period.  The best attempts came late as the only two shots on goal were delivered in the final 10 minutes of play.

First, Afrah Khan's shot to the bottom right inside the box was saved by the opposing keeper on an extended dive to her left.  A few minutes later, Josie Studer was another who sent the ball at goal, but the keeper was up to the task again.

Khan and Sophie Fijneman each led the team with two shots apiece.  Tuva Sallvin got the start in net for the Lady Techsters, allowing the two goals in the first half.  Christina Hjelvik played the entire second half.

LA Tech will return to action on Oct. 10 when they play at Abilene Christian.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
