HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Louisiana Tech will welcome in the New Year when the Lady Techsters travel to the Cam Henderson Center to open Conference USA action against the Marshall Thundering Herd on Friday and Saturday.
Game times for the two-game series will be Friday at 5 p.m. CT and Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. Both contests can be heard on the LA Tech Radio Network on KNBB 99.3 FM with the pregame shows starting 30 minutes prior to tipoff.
The games can also be seen with a paid subscription to CUSATV.com.
LA Tech (5-1, 0-0 C-USA) has won three straight games entering the series, including a hard-fought 68-65 win over UL-Lafayette in its most recent outing on Dec. 20. Marshall (1-1, 0-0) hasn't played since falling at Kentucky on Dec. 9, making it 22 days since the Thundering Herd took the court as a team.
Due to COVID19 concerns following the loss to Kentucky in early December, the Thundering Herd players were sent home early for the Christmas holidays before returning to prepare for the opening of league play.
Both teams have tested negative since returning from the Christmas break and are set to open league play this weekend.
"It's been a tough year," said LA Tech head coach Brooke Stoehr. "We talk a lot about family within this program. Family is a big deal to us. Because of that, we obviously allowed our players to go home to see their families during the break. That was important to us. Our players were ultra-cautious and did a good job of wearing their masks. We understand and appreciate the sacrifices they have made to get to this point.
"We immediately tested them all when they returned to campus after Christmas. They weren't allowed to go to their apartments or hang out with each other until they came and got tested. They all came back with negative test results, and we are excited about opening up league against this weekend."
The Lady Techsters lead the all-time series against Marshall 4-3 in a series that has been mostly played in Huntington. Following this weekend's two games, seven of the nine meetings between the two programs will have been played at the Cam Henderson Center.
Tech defeated Marshall 60-50 last year in Ruston while the Thundering Herd won the last meeting in Huntington 90-88 in triple overtime during the 2018-19 season.
Keiunna Walker (16.3 ppg, 14 charges taken), Anna Larr Roberson (12.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Bre Harris (11.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg) are all averaging double figures through the non-conference portion of the schedule while Amber Dixon (8.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and Raizel Guinto (7.7 ppg, 3.2 apg) have provided additional scoring threats.
Defensively, LA Tech is forcing an average of 21.5 turnovers per game which ranks in the Top 25 in the country. The Lady Techsters are also holding their opponents to just 62.3 points per game.
Through its first two games of the year, Marshall is led by preseason All-Conference USA member Savannah Wheeler (17.0 ppg) and Alexis Johnson (14.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg). The Herd have a 69-58 win over Radford and a 79-45 loss at Kentucky on its record.
