Bulldogs Fall to Hilltoppers in Bowling Green

LA Tech is now 17-6 on the season and 8-3 in C-USA play

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It was a frustrating night for Louisiana Tech with turnovers, missed layups and committing fouls.  Even the radio broadcast went out for an extended period of time.

All in all, the Bulldogs ended up falling to the Hilltoppers of WKU by a final score of 65-54 on Thursday night inside E.A. Diddle Arena.

LA Tech (17-6, 8-3 C-USA) dug itself a big hole in the first half, falling behind 44-24 as WKU (15-8, 8-3 C-USA) turned nine forced turnovers into 15 points and put in 12 free throws.

Down by as much as 22 early in the second half, the Bulldogs whittled the deficit down to 10 but that was as close as they would get as their four-game winning streak came to an end.

"The turnovers early allowed WKU to get some easy baskets and allowed them and their crowd to get going," said head coach Eric Konkol.  "I thought from an execution standpoint on both ends of the floor, we just weren't able to get into a great rhythm.

"In the second half, we were able to dig into their lead and did some nice things.  But, we followed that up with a stretch where we turned the basketball over more and gave WKU some second chances."

The Hilltoppers took their largest lead at 49-27 after another pair of free throws, these by Carson Williams, with 17:14 to play in the game.

Over the next six minutes, the Bulldogs put together their best stretch of basketball. They made seven of their next eight field goal attempts with contributions from a lot of different players.

Amorie Archibald got things going with back-to-back threes.  Mubarak Muhammed had a nice finish at the rim.  Andrew Gordon scored four straight, including a breakaway dunk.  And Kalob Ledoux got two layups to fall.

The second basket for Ledoux got the deficit down to 53-43 with 11:10 still to go.  It also put the junior over 1,000 points for his collegiate career.

However, LA Tech followed that strong stretch by not making another field goal for almost 10 minutes of action.

"There was a stretch where they weren't scoring points and we had chances," said Konkol.  "But we turned it over a couple of times, the ball was slipping out of our hands, a host of other things too.  We needed to have some poise and really execute, but we didn't.  WKU's changing defenses really kept us on our heels, trying to get us off balance and they did that."

LA Tech actually made three more field goals and knocked down the same number of three-pointers as WKU.  But the home team sank 19-of-23 free throws while the 'Dogs managed to get to the charity stripe just four times and made two.

Nine different Bulldogs scored, with the highest point total coming from DaQuan Bracey who had nine.  The 54 points was the second-lowest scoring output of the season.

The Hilltoppers were led in scoring by Jordan Rawls who finished with 19.

LA Tech will now head to West Virginia to face off against Marshall on Saturday, Feb. 8.  Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
