Sadie Rylander

Louisiana Tech Director of Video Operations/Creative Services Sadie Rylander is finishing her second year in Ruston. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native is a die-hard fan of all things from the Steel City, especially the NHL's Penguins. This cat lover – mother to Oscar, Marshall and Remi – gives us an inside look to her favorite things about her home city.

1. The City of Black and Gold – Pittsburgh is best known for making steel (the Steel City), but they are also known for all of their professional sports teams having the same colors. The Penguins, Pirates, Steelers and even the United Soccer League team the Riverhounds are decked out in black and gold. This makes it easy to accessorize and rep any Pittsburgh team!

2. Primanti Brothers – If you are eating in Pittsburgh you need to get your hands on a Primanti's sandwich. You pick your favorite meat and cheese, Capicola and Pepperjack for me, then it is topped with the usual lettuce, tomato, and onion. But the special ingredients are the hand-cut French fries and homemade coleslaw slapped right on top! It might sound weird but if you are ever in the Burgh you should definitely try it!

3. Three River Heritage Trail – My mom and a few friends from high school have a yearly tradition: we bike the Three River Heritage Trail every summer. Sightseeing is my favorite part - the Point, PNC Park, and Heinz Field are some of the iconic sights. You travel over multiple bridges as well. Pittsburgh is the city of bridges, 446 in total, beating Venice, Italy! Along the way we stop to shop, eat (Primanti's), and get beers from local breweries.

4. Pittsburgh Breweries – Pittsburgh has some of the best breweries in the nation, in my opinion. One in particular is called Church Brew Works. The building used to be an old church, the current owners bought it and renovated it into a brewery and restaurant. The altar is now where the brewing tanks are housed and where the pews used to be is the sitting area for eating, it is definitely something to check out! Fat Head's also is a go-to. Their Bumbleberry beer, tastes like blueberries, is a summertime must have!

5. Mount Washington Overlook – After our yearly bike ride around the city, my mom, friends, and I would end it by heading to the Mount Washington Overlook. There you can see the entire city of Pittsburgh – downtown, the North Shore, the South Side, the Strip, and Oakland. Seeing the sunlight hit off of the skyscrapers is beautiful and at night seeing the city lit up brings joy to my heart.
